notwell Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 I think England fans just need to accept that they're nowhere near as good as they think they are and are never going to be regardless of who the manager is. That statement just isn't true. A good manager makes all the difference. The Portugal coach is a good example. He has a system and the players bought in to it. They have a great team spirit and it showed. They didnt lose a game. And a fair few of their players are pretty ordinary. Greece did the same in 2004. England have the players capable of getting to the latter stages of major tournaments. What they have not had is a manager capable of it probably since Hoddle. Shame he turned into a delusional twat. I think Allaryce could do well for England.
woolley Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 I think England fans just need to accept that they're nowhere near as good as they think they are and are never going to be regardless of who the manager is. Bunch of lazy, weak-kneed, spineless, clueless, overpaid, underperforming tossers. Would be better playing a bunch of kids. Think Allardyce is a great appointment though. At least there will be a strategy, and anyone who can't be arsed won't play more than once.
quilp Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 I think England fans just need to accept that they're nowhere near as good as they think they are and are never going to be regardless of who the manager is. What about the team though...
Monkey boy Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 I think England fans just need to accept that they're nowhere near as good as they think they are and are never going to be regardless of who the manager is. What about the team though... They're overrated, they have a few reasonably good players but no greats & some very poor. It has been the same for the 30 or more years I have followed football. One or two stand out talents; Gazza, quite a few good players; Robson, Shearer, Beckham, Gerrard many quite poor by top international standards. They've got some promising young players at the moment but nowhere near enough or good enough to win a major tournament. England fans just need to accept their level in international football which has been consistent for many years.
TheTeapot Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 Portugal just won a major tournament with 3 good players. England's problem for years has been the lack of a proper team. You'd like to think that Sam would sort that right out.
the stinking enigma Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 with the way the seedings work nowadays, it's virtually impossible for a highly seeded team not to qualify for a major tournament. even woy won 10 out of 10. Sam won't... i am genuinely amazed that more people don't see him as a clown
ans Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 Allardyce suffers from the stigma of his appearance and his regional accent and his Big Sam nickname. He looks like a caricature of a football manager from the 70s but underneath all that, he's been one of the most forward thinking managers of the last ten years, embracing all the advanced stats and technologies he can. I'm no England fan but he's an excellent appointment and should do well. However, England fans are delusional if they think they have a crop of world class players to compete for championships. A quarter final appearance in a major tournament should be viewed as a great success for them. That's not going to be Sam's fault though, you can only do so much with the players he has available to him. To stand any chance though, he needs to be ruthless and end the international careers of a bunch of players and concentrate on developing a real team based in youth. You wont win early, but you can mould a team to be competitive and challenging for bigger things with a 4-6 year plan. The fact he's only been given a two year contract doesn't bode well for the FA buying into that timeline.
notwell Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 You don't need world class players to win a tournament. Greece and Portugal have proved that.
the stinking enigma Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 sam may have the stats but he has no subtlety. we will see who is right ans. he's a bullshitter, no wonder he is quite popular on here
the stinking enigma Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 I don't think there is any coach more sophisticated than me any more. Sam Allardyce
notwell Posted July 24, 2016 Posted July 24, 2016 sam may have the stats but he has no subtlety. we will see who is right ans. he's a bullshitter, no wonder he is quite popular on here He's got a proven track record of improving the clubs he has managed. I don't really see the bullshit angle. His results speak for themselves. The unknown is perhaps how he'll handle what are supposedly the best players. Ego and vanity of the likes of Hart. I think he'll do well.
