I watched the last in the top gear series tonight. Interview with Ecclestone.  The whole thing was weird.

I really must do that. Whenever I've watched these things before the entire proceedings have been uneventful. Just like standing at the side of the road watching the traffic go by. What IS the attraction of this activity?

Before technology took over it was actually a decent spectator sport.

In my opinion, technology has in fact vastly improved the spectator experience, whether at the live arena or watching on television.  

Whilst witnessing the grand prix cars in action in person during the 1950's at a circuit brought you up almost close enough to feel the wind as they passed, sadly on occasions proving too close for some spectators, the entries were sparse and the field regularly became very strung out after a few laps.  Races ended with first and second places separated by many minutes, not a few seconds as now. There were no live TV screens to show the action around the course, no audible commentary, no headphone radios.  You stood on a bank or perched atop a step ladder and did your best to tick off passing cars in your programme.  Mind you, I loved it.  The smell of Castrol R immediately takes me back to a wet field at Silverstone, egg sandwiches and the queues outside the overflowing toilet tents.

I would contend that the TV experience is now also far better for the viewer.  There was originally little or no TV coverage of races, perhaps a short clip on the news with longer reports on Pathe at the cinema.  Now, you are left in no doubt about who is leading, how far back are those in pursuit, full coverage of pit stops and every aspect covered and analysed.  You don't need to watch at the time of the broadcast, simply record and see it when convenient, fast forwarding at adverts and any unexciting parts.

All thanks to technology.  True, the cars are vastly more complex and harder for the newcomer to the sport to appreciate, but trust me, they are no less watchable for that.

Its the old nostalgia thing. Even in the senna and prost golden years it was only really 4 or 5 drivers that could win at any given event
