TheTeapot Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 There will be Arsenal fans nearly 30 who have never known a different manager.
wrighty Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 He should have gone a few years ago. It's always best to leave with them wanting you to stay, rather than sticking it out while everyone thinks your time is up.
thebees Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 This has been stuck in my head ever since the news was going on and on and on about a football manager retiring - here.
TheTeapot Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Wow. The Vengboys were even worse than I thought.
winnie Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 Premier League football has lost it's identity. Arsenal FC is a football team full of foreigner players, owned by a foreigner and managed by a foreigner's. They built a new stadium with foreign money and named it after a foreign company. They just happen to play home games in London, but the exact model could easily work in Newcastle, Birmingham, Liverpool or Manchester. Gone are the local youth players coming up through the system, gone is a proper football ground full of local people including youngsters that could actually afford to get in. In, is a non-atmospheric 'flat pack' stadium (a very good version) full of corporate 'day trippers' and middle aged bankers from Surrey that leave early so they don't have to queue for the tube. Sky has ruined Premier League football, and I believe the bubble is slowly deflating.

The current Arsenal 1st team has the following British players: Rob Chambers Aaron Ramsey Jack Wilshere Ainsley Maitland-Niles Danny Wellbeck Plus others currently on loan elsewhere, like Carl Jenkinson who came up through the Charlton youth system. Man City has 6, plus several on loan. Barça have 5 Spanish players in their first team, Real Madrid a similar set up (I got bored counting them at this point!) so not wildly different in Spain, and they have enjoyed more recent International success than England, So, I take your point but there are still British players in the Premier League. To put the counter argument, fans want their side to win games and they want to see world class players. I think there is a strong argument that it is club football, and internationally, club competitions like the Champions League that are the main show these days.
the stinking enigma Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 The champions league is a way higher standard than the world cup.
manxman1980 Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 Does anyone else think that Wenger almost downed tools after a lack of investment from the Arsenal board? Compare how motivated and calm he was at the start of his tenure to the last few years when he has done nothing but sulk. He always had his faults (never saw his team do anything wrong) but he did bloody well to stop a very good Manchester United side from dominating the league every season. Once Mourinho came in at Chelsea the landscape changed once again and Wenger did not seem to have an answer.

I know there are 'some' British players at these teams, but most are fringe players that have been 'poached' from lower league teams and have not come through there own academy's. The big teams have satellite academy's in many cities to 'poach' youngsters from smaller clubs, and later just put them out on loan in div 1 and 2. Chelsea have in the region of 40 players out on loan, and i think the last Chelsea academy player to play for the 1st team was John Terry. There is only prem team with a successful academy, and they basically feed Liverpool and make up half the team!!!!! (can't wait for them to be relegated as i'm a Portsmouth fan) Barca may only have 5 spanish players, but you need to include portugese and south american players as they have massive ties with both. Bit like english clubs with welsh, irish and scotish players. Yes, i understand supporters want there team to win games, cups and leagues, but being a football supporter is not just about winning.
Declan Posted April 25, 2018 Posted April 25, 2018 Liverpool's starting line up included 5 British players, including a 19 year born 3 miles from the ground.

winnie Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Liverpool team last night had 2 players from Liverpool, 4 players from Southampton, and 12 non british players. Well done Liverpool, another English team in a champions league final though!!

winnie Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Think he was born in Sunderland and came through their academy, then poached by Liverpool when he had 'made it'.
Declan Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Undoubtedly we signed Henderson as an established player, but that's always been the case that larger clubs buy from smaller ones. It's how the pyramid works. Southampton have turned it into a business model, that until this season has kept them in the Premier after 7 years away during which time they'd dropped out to league one. In fact Liverpool are similar to Southampton, acting as a means of channeling money from Madrid, Barcelona and Qatar to Southampton, Sunderland and Hull.
