As a lawyer I’m not sure the “it’s never not returned on my command before” defence will work. A dog should not need to be on a lead to be under control and equally just because a dog is on a lead it does not mean it is under control. Basically a lead should be the back up, but these days the majority of dogs that I see around have not been well trained and in part I blame the extendable lead which was not around when I was a kid. Yes we had our dog on a lead but the dog basically matched our pace and the lead always hung loose. Off the leash told to "stay" or "down" it would drop to the floor and not move until told to do so no matter what the distraction. Similarly if called to heal it would come immediately. It would not go bounding up to people and kids uninvited. Nowadays in seems many people don't appear to train their dogs properly and rely on the extendable lead to pull in back when they want to and let it go other times so the dog has no real idea what it should be doing. The extendable lead should be basically as a back up when a dog is given a bit of freedom, it should be controlled by the owners commands not the lead be extended and retracted as the owner sees fit with the dog having no real idea what is going on. Half the time the owner is also not paying attention so walking down the prom or on the pavement you have the owner chatting away paying little attention with the dog on the other side of the pavement, often some way before or behind so the lead is stretched across getting in the way of those trying to get past.

P.K. Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 This topic rattles around from time to time I abhor the way dog owners imbue their dogs with human characteristics and tell you that "He/she doesn't bite....etc etc." Well here's some news for you. They ALL fucking bite. That's why they have teeth FFS.....! It's a fucking dog. Not a person.... How many times do you come across dog owners where you could say "One word from you and the dog does what it likes...." As an adult how would you like to meet an out of control dog that's as big as a horse? Because that's how the kiddies see them. They're dogs and anyone who treats them as anything else is a Gordon a la Jilted John....

Spot the daft dog owner whose stupid mutt has "character" or whatever. No doubt it doesn't bite either. Well, not very often anyway.....
