World Cup Rugby

England no where near as focused as they were against NZ, fair few mistakes today. SA defence looks really strong. England are going to have to improve quickly if they want to win this.

Exciting. Full of what ifs at the moment. Can England get a try back. Then it will be a fun last 10 minutes. But only if. Otherwise it’s SA’s!

Me and me dad think you see better rugby at Douglas (or Vaga's Or Ramsey or Nomads or Vikings or where ever I've forgotten) on a Saturday afternoon, those boys are too big, they crash around and the games are all tactical, that's not what sport should be about, tactics are for wars. All that said, the Springboks played a cracking game, the only down side to this is that already insufferable South Africans become more insufferable... great.

The whole ‘World Cup’ thing is bollocks though isn’t it. The bloody thing was only ever going to be won by the All Blacks, England, France or SA. Tonga, Samoa and Canada? Bugger off. It’s just a month long money-spinner leading to a virtually nailed on outcome. Football will go the same way when they increase to 32 teams at the finals. In fact the (virtually certainly corrupt) choice of that footballing colossus Quatar to host the next one (in fucking December) tells us where the balance lies between common sense and money. At least unlike the rugby there are a few more than four potential winners.

I’d say 7 potential winners - add in Australia, Wales and Ireland to your list of four. I see your point though, but how else could it be done? Perhaps a straight knockout for the top 8 ranked sides in the world over 3 consecutive weekends? But then we’d miss out on the upsets (like the Scots threatening legal action and then losing) and the minnows would never develop the game, like Japan are now doing.

Fair comment. The development of the ‘lesser’ nations being the strongest argument in favour of the status quo I’d say.

The fans enjoy it immensely. It brings people from diverse countries together in a mutual interest and it gives young players throughout the world something to aspire to. OK, it makes oodles of money but so do many other things that are pleasurable to the masses. The money made then makes the economy go round for a little longer. I don't see a problem although, no doubt, Greta Thunberg will heartily disapprove of the carbon footprint.

Only because Sweden are even shitter at rugby than Tonga.

Tonga aren’t shit at rugby. They have a population of 108,000. They beat the USA and and kept France to within 2 points last month in the RWC, but because you don’t earn much playing for such a small country 9 Tonga-born players also played for other countries at the World Cup (including 2 All Blacks). In the same month their Rugby League team beat Great Britain 14 - 6.
