Whatever you think about the result, it's surely better than finishing under the SC?

There is wriggle room in the regs for Masi to do what he did, that is, over ruling regs.

Given that Hamilton was in front on his own before the safety car and was not in any real danger of being caught then the correct decision would have been to finish under the safety car.  Sure, it is not exciting but could have proved a fitting few laps of honour for Hamilton clinching an 8th championship.

Finishing the first decent title fight in years under the safety car wouldn't have done the sport any good.

If the race had been red flagged and re-started on fresh tyres, there is nothing to guarantee Lewis the win, he left the door open at turn 5, Max could still have got through?

And this result has?

In terms of audience and excitement for next year? Definitely. In terms of sporting fairness, eh. But neither would a finish under safety car. The best solution would've been a red flag and restart, but Masi bungled that.

I think it would have been a bit fairer to let it finish under the safety car, rather than gift it to the guy that was overtaken at the start and never had the pace all race. Too late now, i think it actually could be quite good for hamiltons legacy to accept this defeat graciously. Which he has.

Finishing under safety car may have been fairer (though still pretty unfair, just in a different direction). The right course of action would've been a red flag and restart. But the officiating has been a joke all season.

It will be interesting to see the impact of the rule changes next season.  If they don't deliver closer racing and more overtakes then those "new" fans who tuned in on Sunday may not hang around when they realise that 99% of races don't end with a one lap showdown.

Should the Race Director and FIA continue to make decisions like that on Sunday then they will also lose a lot of fans who will see the interference as the races being fixed in the interests of TV audiences.  I have already seen people comparing the result with WWE wrestling and expressing fears that it will no longer be a sport but become "sports entertainment".

I'm cautiously optimistic about the rule changes. And less-cautiously optimistic about George Russell.

Race direction/FIA have been shitting the season up all year. Misapplied rules, inconsistently applied rules, the farce at Spa. The only good thing Masi has done all year is to sass Toto over the radio. Shame it was that miserable shit Horner who benefited.

Toto seems to have gotten over it quickly anyway.

In fairness Mercedes did win the constructors championship which is where the real money is.  It would be churlish not to celebrate the teams overall success.

Personally I think they really need to ban all teams from trying to influence the race by lobbying the RD during the race, the 'dangerous driving' message from Toto to Masi was just so cringeworthy,  every man and his dog could see that was hard but fair racing from Checo.

If the teams want consistency going forward then they need to let the RD and stewards get on with it, not cloud their judgement with constant barrages of whinging and whining.

I watched a recording of the race, but did not know the result before hand.

What a farce of an ending to a classic season.  The vast majority of commentators both on MF, radio, TV and press agree that Hamilton was robbed.  Both the lead drivers are immensely talented and for the season's trophy to be handed to Max on the whim of the race director who misinterpreted the rule is, to my mind, unfair to say the least.

Perez made an outstanding defence against the number 44 Merc for a while.  The best moment for me was when Lewis shook hands with Max.  On Thursday the big trophy will be handed to the 2021 champion at the F1 Gala Dinner.  The result is still under appeal.  Whose name will be engraved on it?

I hope they seat Toto next to Christian.  Bread rolls will be thrown!

It can be quite amusing for us listening? Probably doesn't affect the Stewards decisions. Censorship???

Would be interesting to know if Lewis wanted to contest the the result in the cold light of day, even M-B should be asking if their action is bringing more disrepute than the race?

Max V. from Autosport today........

“There was one side that was incredibly happy, and one side that was disappointed,”

“Of course, I felt for Lewis. He did everything right, throughout the whole race. But, you know, F1 can be very unpredictable.

“And, of course, it can go either way. It could have been the other way around as well, where I would be controlling the race and then I would lose it on the last lap. That's, unfortunately, also part of racing.”
