I thought it a bit weird that he did it with charitable donations. I would like to go on a Caribbean cruise, but wouldn't open a gofundme page for it.

Or maybe I missed something.

'Fans' fund all types of people for all sorts of things. I think he also had some corporate sponsorship as well. I'm not really one of his fans so didn't put anything towards his Dakar event, I suppose that's it then it's a choice thing.

Caribbean sounds nice, wouldn't go near a cruise ship though for a long time!

I believe that he had full sponsorship and then was let down so was just searching for any way to be able to afford to get out there after qualifying for a place in the event

He's one of the best in the world at what he does and he's Manx. His sport doesn't attract big money at his level so he's not living in a mansion or doing this as a bit of a jolly.

I think it showed in his videos how genuine he was with his thanks for the donations and how much it meant to him and I think a lot of people who are fans of his are happy to be able to directly support his ventures. It's a more usefully direct way of buying him a pint and saying well done.

I think he’s a superstar , top of his game ,  not much funding really and getting sniped at by arseholes in Lycra must grate.
