Furry Mongoose Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 I am muchos enjoying books by Tom Sharpe at the moment - particularly the Wilt books - ultra recommended peeps!
Gladys Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 Yep, agree with you Lonan. TS hit on a formula which he did use repetively. But his use of sex toys in ridiculous situations is hilarious!
steven ! Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Too true. Over 20 years ago I was fortunate to read Wilt first. I literally couldn't put the book down. At work I had to keep taking ten minute breaks to read a few more pages. And it was the first time I realised the phrase 'laugh out loud' when reading a book I was extremely disappointed to find all the rest of the books had the same formula. Something on the lines of a downtrodden bloke in a ridiculous situation that gets even more ridiculous meets lots of sexual perversion. The TV series was ok-ish and it was interesting to see how the book would be interpreted. Blow up doll in the pile hole and all that. I searched for the same readng enjoyment in the rest of his books but just felt each time that I had been conned out of a few hours of my life.

Celt Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 The Throwback is a must. His best one imo. Never laughed so much at a book.
bozz Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 I couldn't stop laughing at the bit about the elephant gun in Riotous Assembly, meself.
Tea&Biscuits Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 I am a big fan of Tom Sharpe and I read Wilt when I was about 15, also agree with Celt that The Throwback is his best work! Absolutely hilarious!
Chinahand Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Another vote for the Throwback. Very happy memories of laughing til my sides hurt!
thebees Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Ah yes, The Throwback (that's the one where they do something mental with the sewers and the toilet blows up...or something f'in hilarious), very funny but, my favourite is Vintage Stuff - no Wilt, no Riotous Assembly hahaha, they're all very funny books. He had a good innings, hope it was all peaceful and nice for him
