Amadeus Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I doubt Shoprite closing would be the sole reason for this: MNFU says acquisition had massive impact on sector The Island's fruit and vegetable production is on the brink of collapse, according to the Manx National Farmers' Union. It's claiming demand has fallen since Shoprite announced it was being taken over by Tesco. https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/shoprite-closure-could-see-end-of-manx-fruit-and-veg-production-warns-union/ If only there was someone who could do something about it, like, I don't know, a local politician? https://www.facebook.com/ManxRadio/posts/pfbid02JSo1Vy1veXiUD9sHNCgAYMCtPctRjoYfAZGbEmkg8Wmaq4xJao927BDBrWk6siMRl Quote
Bill1977 Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Agriculture and food produce is an area where the IOM could be really strong. We have enough agricultural land and as we are ‘behind’ the UK and the US our production methods are still quite organic. 1 1 Quote
Non-Believer Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 Lots of our agricultural land has more value as, if not already earmarked for, building development. 1 1 Quote
Albert Tatlock Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I don't know why so many people rave about Manx veg...personally I find it pretty damp, limp and poor quality. 1 Quote

But you'd literally fight for it if there was a world food shortage. As Philly Gawne said, if we don't give the farmers (landowners) lots of money they won't be able to grow food and then we will all die. Although in fairness, lots of the land is being sold for housing so it doesn't really matter anymore. 19 minutes ago, Non-Believer said: Lots of our agricultural land has more value as, if not already earmarked for, building development. Mercenary Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 If the future of Manx fruit and veg rested on two Manx businesses allergic to investment (Shoprite & Ramsey Bakery) then this a shame, although I am glad the Government did not realise this in sufficient time to buy/prop up these companies. Quote
Gladys Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 How much Manx veg did Shoprite stock? Mainly potatoes, cabbage and possibly carrots as far as I can remember. Quote

Don't the Greens think that Farmers are all eco-vandalising, animal torturers secretly trying to kill us all? Quote

My comment was more around the regulations brought in to combat the so called climate emergency and subsequent expansion of gov jobs to support it. Defa can find the money for carbon officers and upland rangers, but can't afford to put on a food and drink festival for local producers 3 1 Quote

Pollinating insects are at low levels this year due to the cold, wet, windy, inclement, weather, as much as anything else. add to that the effect of the inclement weather on germination and ground conditions. 16 minutes ago, Gladys said: How much Manx veg did Shoprite stock? None of which require pollination ( unless you’re growing for seed ). Not sure about grain crops, rape, flax or mustard, in terms of affected crops, clearly they do require pollination, but ground conditions are still poor. Do we have much in the way of apples, pears, plums, produced commercially, again requiring pollination, but is anyone producing soft fruit other than for pick your own. Quote

It's supply and demand. Manx fruit and veg is largely poor quality and almost double the price of equivalent produce. If there was demand for it then Tesco would be stocking it. 2 2 1 Quote
Moghrey Mie Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 (edited) We can only grow potatoes, carrots, strawberries and tomatoes here. And it is virtually impossible to find people to pick and pack them. Thanks to TESCO we have become used to pears, apples, grapefruit, oranges, melons, kiwi-fruit and the rest, of uniform quality and all the year round. Manx producers need to stop complaining and find markets for their stuff. Edited July 30, 2024 by Moghrey Mie 2 Quote
