Tinpot
This sounds like a nice idea. https://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/entertainment/rushen-mhk-sets-up-monthly-cinema-night-in-port-st-mary-726072? I wonder who is paying the relevant licensing fees to make it legal to do this?

Presumably they will need a license to publicly broadcast copyrighted films?

StCatherine
Nearly all the films listed require a fee from one of the big distribution agents even for free of charge community screenings. They typically want a fixed fee per screening plus a cut of any door fees but I would imagine that won’t have been thought about by the villages self appointed expert on everything. More electioneering under the guise of community events which will probably cost psm commissioners dearly when they get the demand for allowing screenings in their venue. It’s would take about 10 seconds on Google to see the first film falls under the scope of it.

Anyway if she was electioneering you'd think she would occasionally acknowledge the existence of Port Erin.
thommo2010
It pretty much shows all the nonsense. Trying to show a film and all the hassle you need to go through. Why bother?

Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of, well anyone with half a brain. You've got to be pragmatic with these things. It's PSM, a tiny and insignificant backwater. It's unlikely in the extreme that the big distribution agents will be any the wiser. In the extremely unlikely event that they do find out and take an interest it's even more extremely unlikely that they'd do anything more than a cease and desist letter or require them to pay a fee for future screening. Gladys
Again, you don't have to go. As long as no public money is being used, what is the issue? 4

The Voice of Reason
For goodness sake. Someone shows a bit of initiative and they get dragged down. I’m sure there’s nothing that can’t be overcome. A few years ago I was discussing with Rox a Sunday afternoon screening of “ Casablanca” in a cafe in PSM. Can’t remember the name of the venue ( something to do with “salt and “pepper” ?). Anyway it was a lovely afternoon with the opportunity to buy refreshments whilst you watched the film. I believe Peel do something similar in the Centenary Centre. Be great as well to have something like that in Ramsey.

Especially when a politician gets involved as there can only be one reason! BTW, not a fan of MH, (in fact not a fan of any of them), but she does seem to be trying to create something to benefit PSM, although the choice of films isn't exactly enticing!
Albert Tatlock
Could have been a raft of headlines there...from..."Local politician starts a community film club" to "MHK promotes rauncy transgender film in quiet village". There'll be a few scones on the floor if the WI are attending... .
Tinpot
At the end of the day, rules are rules and everyone should be on a level playing field. Have a word on the guys at ELS and see what their thoughts on the matter are. There are loads of events they could put on and hope nobody would care but they don’t, they do it properly or they don’t do it at all and it costs money. Why should other places or people just be allowed to ignore rules in the name of a few people having fun? Hopefully it’s all in hand and above board.
