Tinpot Posted October 31 Posted October 31 Well, at least for paper and I would imagine it applies the same to everything else by the time we ship it away. Glass can be reused on island so is possibly an exception. I am surprised it took them this long to work it out. https://www.gov.im/news/2024/oct/30/removing-paper-bring-banks-will-save-money-and-help-the-environment 2 Quote

Two-lane Posted October 31 Posted October 31 It could become a problem over winter. Look at the sea transport problems there have been over summer. Things will be much worse over winter. Tesco's shelves will be devoid of toilet paper. Then what will people use? 1 1 Quote

I wonder how much time and fuel people have wasting thinking they were doing the right thing? Much as I would like to like the idea, I've always been very skeptical about the recycling here. Unless it can actually be done here on Island, I can only assume that the extra carbons released from picking it up, shipping it and then transporting it to a recycling plant wouldn't net off against the perceived environmental benefits. Unfortunately there doesn't really seem to be much available data to review to consider the options. But hey, people can make money off the Green Scheme, irrespective of whether there is evidence that it is Greener. It might even be ultimately more polluting than just burning or landfilling it. The best option is really just trying to reduce the amount of waste you create. It's a shame beer doesn't come in cartons. Edited October 31 by The Phantom 5 Quote

Moghrey Mie Posted October 31 Posted October 31 What's the point in having a consultation on the waste strategy if they are going to do their own thing anyhow? 1 Quote

In this instance it’s the right thing. Anyone who has ever thought that recycling the small amounts the island produces by shipping them away and then having diesel trucks transport the stuff at both ends was either environmental or economically viable was deluded. An island in the middle of the Irish Sea trying to recycle stuff has always just been virtue signalling and pointless. Hopefully this is the start of people starting to see sense and more stuff going to the EFW plant. 2 Quote

Most newspapers can be shredded and added to green compost. Don't know why they don't hand it over to the guys who compost the green waste at the other side of the Eastern Civic Recycling Centre. Why would they bother separating the small amount of newspaper from all the other paper to do that. Just lob it in the EFW plant and be done with it. Quote
