Dave the Cardboard Box Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 There was a thread on Manxnet which wandered very laterally into all the pubs and clubs which had shut down in the last 20 years or so. I think I could repeat them all in one go, but it's only right that other nostalgia freaks have their turn. So how about repeating them here so we have a record for posterity – and so we can indulge in a bit of fist waving and grrrrring at Mr. Heron and Mr. Brearley? Here are some from Ramsey: Please feel free to continue with areas of your own expertise: 1. The Crown - good place for a pint with Titty Lip 2. The Victoria - still haunted by Liverpool Jean 3. Peveril and 4. Isle of Alanis - both downstairs to hell 5. Talk of the Town - where are those matches? 6. The Queens - must remember to take the parrots out for a drive.... (and anyone who can list those lost when South Ramsey was demolished in the 60’s gets bonus points)
Guest Rox Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 6. The Queens - must remember to take the parrots out for a drive.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Heh - I always thought it was the budgie they took out for a run in the car....quite fortuitious really. Whoever would have thought that at the very moment they were happily travelling around pointing out beauty spots to the budgie - their hotel was merrily burning down. I know it's a bit naff and everyone says it, but for me, the pub that holds the very best memories has to be the Dog's Home. A whole microcosm of society in one room. Quite an equaliser I can tell you. If you didn't already know.

Another Ramsey pub was the Antrim on the Mooragh Prom, but that could have had a different name which you already mentioned. Of course I'm far too young to remember old Ramsey and it takes some stretch of the imagination to picture it now anyway. I know that the Old Swan was located at Ramsey's original market place (the Old Cross) and this building was one of the last to be demolished out of hundreds of properties in the old town but resistance was futile. Wasn't there an Albert down there aswell? But I could be making this up as I go along now. I'll have to ask the old girl. Do I get a gold star?
sideways Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Had some great nights in the MGM , also the Falcon Cliff, memories ....
Dave the Cardboard Box Posted August 4, 2004 Author Posted August 4, 2004 Antrim may have been the Isle of Alanis - but who cares? Three pubs shut down now for the price of two. Dogs Home - the ultimate pub - I know someone who is considering creating it as a virtual pub on-line - but with better kept Okells. There was a while not many years ago when the Commie in Ramsey almost became as socially mixed as the Dogs Home, but that's a story for Helen and her big stick to tell....
Shill Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 The Shakespear Bushys (Obviously) The Ridgeway Dow Jones The Eagle in Port Erin

jagman Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 The Halfway House, The Highlander, The Ballacraine, The Majestic, The Alex Inn and, well before my time, The Aragon(?) Sorry, I see FCMR has already listed the Majestic. Does anyone remember the strip show there in the early 1980s which turned into a full scale riot? One of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Dave the Cardboard Box Posted August 4, 2004 Author Posted August 4, 2004 Curio The Sun The Moon The Talbot The Britania <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Curio still exists as Donnellys - real name the Derby. Sun, Moon, and Talbot disappeared long before the Ardern Scything. Why, even I am not old enough to have drunk in them. There are loads of ex-pubs around which no-one alive will remember, such as Rest and Be Thankful, Duke of York on the Halfway House straight etc. (I suppose no-one dead will remember them either - death is probably the ultimate form of Alzheimers) Don't know of the Britannia, except in Ramsey.
manxbird Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 The Peel Castle ............. ah It was definately a parrot and they were so forgetful they forgot to shut the safe door that day. (one day I'll learn how to insert quotes)
FCMR Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 The Britania was opposite the old police station, now shores brow car park. And the signage for the Sun & Moon can still be clearly seen in Victoria street And do you remember the pub at the end of Athol Street G.......... and the Bounty Bar just across the road.

Stav.
jagman Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 And do you remember the pub at the end of Athol Street G.......... The Grosvenor.
