Ean Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Why isn't there a "Brown & Healthy" ? It's called whole and healthy. Does all of RB's white bread contain this stuff, like the Gold Crust stuff and their batch loaves? If they do then there's not much you can do about it if you want to eat white bread.
Slim Posted August 11, 2004 Author Posted August 11, 2004 Pretty much. There's some non-local brands that don't contain it. Ans: The beef with hydrogenation (a way of making a cheap unsaturated fat act like a saturated fat, often to replace butter as a preservative) is that it can create trans fats. There's no requirement to have trans fats on lables bizzarely, because they don't fall into the categories of fat that must be displayed (saturated, monosaturated, etc). In the US, the FDA have said that trans fats must appear on all food labelling by 2006, but there's no such requirement here or in the UK. Trans fats have no known nutritional benefits, they are known to raise colesterol and increase the risk of heart desease. Some think that because of the way the acids are malformed that they also cause more significant damage than saturated fats. The UK Food Standards Agency has reccomended that people limit their intake of Trans fats, which was what led me to wonder if calling White and Healthly that was really justifed given the warnings. ans Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 I'm all confused, and once again too lazy to use Google, but I've never fully understood all the different types of fat groups and which ones are bad, worst, good for you. Can you list and summarise please?
ans Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Ok, I'm not that lazy Know the Different Types of Fat Saturated Fats Foods high in saturated fats raise blood cholesterol. These foods include high fat diary (cheese, whole milk, cream, butter and ice cream), fatty fresh and processed meats and the skin and fat of poultry, lard, palm oil and coconut oil. Trans Fatty Acids Foods high in trans fatty acids tend to raise blood cholesterol. These foods include those high in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, such as many hard margarines and shortenings. Foods with a high amount of these ingredients include some commercially fried foods and some bakery goods. Unsaturated Fats Unsaturated fats (oils) do not raise blood cholesterol. They occur in vegetable oils, most nuts, olives, avocados, and fatty fish like salmon. Unsaturated oils include both monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. Olive, canola, sunflower, and peanut oils are some of the oils high in monounsaturated fats. Vegetable oils such as soybean oil, corn oil, and cottonseed oil and many kinds of nuts are good sources of polyunsaturated fats. Use moderate amounts of food high in unsaturated fats, taking care to avoid excess calories.
The Old Git Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 On a similarly irrellevant note, Mods, can I have "White and healthy" as my subtext when and if I qualify for it? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I thought you could do it yourself in your profile settings
