Declan Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 Does it involve saying the phrase = "Tonight Matthew I am going to be Bjork"?

Rog Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 First off the killing of an animal is NOT murder. Murder is a particular crime in which a human being is deliberately and unlawfully killed. Feral dogs, and cats, in Greece, as with many other countries, are a pest and the only positive aspect of their existence is that they tend to predate on other pests – especially rodents. In this way they do at least serve some useful purpose in limited and acceptable numbers. When the numbers get unsustainable or when there are just too damn many of them there is no alternative to a cull, and if poisoned bait must be used or is the most efficient manner or the most cost effective then so be it. Not nice, but then so often things that must be done never are. Ever seen a rat die from wafarin? It doesn’t just go to sleep. Culling of creatures turned feral is by no means restricted to animals though. The infamous culling of kids in Brazil and other South American countries is well known and admitted and even seen by many as being a public service. Same with ‘Street People’. I was amazed at how many such people I would see wandering around the streets at night and asleep during the day until it was pointed out to me that if they sleep at night there is a better than even chance they will be discretely shot or knifed by the police. No, really, it honestly is like that, at least in Rio and Sao Paulo for certain. So if a bunch of feral dogs are put down in Greece, although I feel sorry for them if inhumane methods are employed, I do recognise that necessity often dictates what must be done but would point out that although there may well be / have been a particular purge for the Olympic Games the practice has been taking place for years and remains ongoing.
Ean Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 I was expecting an interesting debate on the fact that Neighbours is not being shown for the next 2 weeks. I feel cheated!
Rog Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Steven, even the finest plant in the wrong place is a weed, so also the nicest and most cuddly animal in the wrong place and / or at the wrong time it is a pest and a variety of steps may need to be taken. It is sad but then so many things that must be done are. Like it or loath it we live in a competitive world and judging from your posts you regret and despair this situation. Well basically tough, neither you nor I nor anyone else can change it. Competition is a genetic component of our make up just as mass slaughter is a part of the make up of a fox. Animals don’t ‘murder’ or kill for fun? Have you ever see a hen house after a single fox has got in? Or watched a cat toy with a mouse or a bird? It was competition and evolution that resulted in the animal and plant life of the world becoming what it is today and that includes us If, as you postulate, an advanced life form were to come to the earth then the probability is that we would be toast unless there had been some competitive advantage in their evolution whereby altruism was a genetic success factor or unless they wanted us as a food source, as slaves, or as pets.
Addie Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 ... Just because we are the most "integent life form" on earth (+ thats debatable ... * me smiles gently and ruffles Steven's hair
