Its a public highway across the front of the building then Harbours control below mean high water so I cant see how they could close access. So to say its a "privately owned bay" on their website is a bit of a jump.

I like Bob Crow. I like his whole stance and how he keeps it simple and sticks to his guns. In that Granada video on ManxTube, the conversation between the union people and the MHK Gawne - well they all come across rather well. Including Mr Gawne who is obviously in a difficult position but who has the decency to at least try to listen to them. I like how Bob Crowe has a single straight perspective - which is about representing the people he is paid to represent. There should be more of that - even if we do not always agree with the POV. I like people with a definite political perspective.

 

And they've got a point if the Mezeron people really are on ultra low wages. That doesn't mean that the UA is a good thing. The UA increasingly looks like an out of date stitch-up. Not good for the workers and not good for the IOM (because it seems to have been about making a deal which could be traded for cash). There were a few deals put in place around the time of the UA which were quite odd TBH.

 

ETA: if the wages thing is true then the IMO/UN and the EU maybe need to be looking at introducing minimum wages as a part of international shipping regulations.

I like Bob Crow too, pretending to be a socialist man of the people whilst raking in £100k+ with a grace and favour home. Phil Gawne stood up well in that clip, the only "manx" accent I could discern amoungst the union bully boys. As others have pointed out, they should be lobbying the Steam Packet, its their fuck up for becoming complacent. Can anyone confirm if he showed solidarity by arriving on the Ben ? I'm sure the SP Chairman Mr Quayle will now be earning his pennies leaning on his contacts from his time as Tynwald Clerk.

I imagine they will put up with it just as they did when the SP didnt sail. Its not as if the SP ran a special Tesco airfreighting service if it was too rough to sail.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne, MHK

The infrastructure minister has told the Steam Packet it can expect no special treatment from government, as it comes to terms with the rival freight service which has been set up by Ramsey based Mezeron, between Douglas and Liverpool.

Phil Gawne says there is nothing in the government's user agreement with the company to prevent a container-based freight service out of the capital, and there has always been a possibility one could be started.

He says the Steam Packet must fight to ensure its survival, and is confident it can overcome the problems it is facing, following the loss of key freight customers Tesco and Shoprite to the rival operation (play audio file):

Steam Packet chief executive Mark Woodward has cliamed the Mezeron freight operation poses a threat to his company's passenger services, and Mezeron is not competing for freight busines on a level playing field. "

I'd like to see you bring a prosecution under the higway code, I assume it will be the highway act or Road Traffic Act but the I'm quite sure you can cycle away to your hearts content on the pavement on the island without fear of prosecution unless your a danger to others. Im sure JIMBMS will enlighten us

I agree it is an offence in the UK.

Its not illegal to cycle on pavements on the Island from what i recall, although its is an offence to "cycle furiously"....

My money is on the Sefton group somehow sneaking in with the preferred tender and erecting "Exciting new 4* hotel development coming soon" signage but continuing to run it as a carpark until the Government give them a grant to do something.
