Ok, and is that off peak tariff just for your EV charger or for all your off peak consumption?

Could you use the timer on your washing machine, dishwasher, even immersion heater on the cheap off peak, purely because you own an electric vehicle?

I have the comfy heating tariff ( same as most houses / flats on the island that have electric heating/ boilers). That's not based on EV ownership.

Off peak electric is for the energy use of the entire house ..

As I mentioned before the comfy heating  tariff is cheaper than the EV rates and has an afternoon off peak period as well . Ev tariff doesn't have that. So if the house is well insulated and you can live without gas then that is a better option.

PS: Don't need an EV or solar for the comfy heating tariff..

Ok. And what is the EV tariff for home use?

28.5 p peak and 19.5 p off peak ( midnight to 0600 UTC) . You have to install a charging pod and get someone to sign it off and get a dual meter installed. So that's a minimum of £1k +++ .

If you are not on gas heating , its cheaper to get the comfy heating tariff  which is 16.7 p off peak . This is cheaper than the EV rates and has more time off peak ( midnight to 0600 UTC and 1400 to 1600 UTC ) . Most people with solar etc will be on this one..  you can sell the excess to the grid but they only pay something like 9.5p for every unit that you generate and sell on to them though:-(.

So makes more sense to use it rather than sell it to the grid.

I think that's probably optimistic. Not that I don't think they'll necessarily last that long (although very little electronic equipment does these days) ,but they'll be superceded in half that time.

Normal electricity customers pay a standing charge to pay for the network. Is there a standing charge added on to the tariff of public EV chargers? I wouldn't mind betting they pay a lower tariff too.

It's like pre-payment meter users don't get prompt payment discounts despite paying in advance for their electricity - allegedly because of the cost of running the prepayment system.

I can only assume £600k is not considered a cost.

Same old story on the IOM. Shaft the poor while giving your rich mates subsidies left right and centre.

It's  31.1 p per unit for EV charging at the podpoints ..

    Vs

28.5 p per unit for the electricity for domestic use at home.

Gelatory opening a third shop in Peel.

More evidence that good businesses will grow and crap ones will die.

I wonder if they have been begging government for a hospitality hand out, or just working hard and giving a good product with good service?

This will probably hit Davisons hard..They seem to cater mostly for the older folk  like me  these days . 😐The younger crowd is more into gelato.

Sorry, but I think Bakkers point deserves a proper response.

We spend a lot of money each month on prescription meds in this house because we don’t meet the criteria for free prescriptions.  I don’t like it, and I moan about it occasionally but it is what it is and we budget for it.

Plus, if I am Being brutally honest, they aren’t self inflicted conditions.

It must be horrible to deal with and you have my sympathy, but presumably you have been deemed able to afford it where some others can’t, and should that change in the future you can be re assessed?

It's £54 for a prepayment certificate for 12 months . Anyone can apply for one.

Retailers don’t like AMEX fees too high.

It's not only that. Amex are much more customer focused than other cards in my experience .  So some retailers are a bit worried about people asking  for a chargeback if goods not upto standard etc

  8. You can apply online to the UK and they will deliver to an IOM address.

    https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/renew

    Choose the renew online option..

I don't know why people even bother applying to the IOM !!!

The UK issued British passport is  also  less likely to create travel issues.

I have posted about this in another thread on the general chat section

I am not going to argue with John here, however, I would say be careful when completing information for flights etc.  Whilst Manx Nationality may not exist there are a number of companies that will let you select "Isle of Man" as your nationality when booking.  If your passport then says British Citizen you may find yourself having to clarify when you travel which could delay you.

This is at check in desks rather than at Passport Control but do bear in mind that any immigration documents may be checked for discrepancies and that may cause issues.

I always select United Kingdom even though I have an Isle of Man variant British passport .

The timatic system that most airline check in agents use do not have Isle of Man listed .  Have not had any issues yet for travel at airports. ( have been to 50 odd countries)

What I have had an issue is when I have tried to apply for e-visa . Some countries reject your application if you apply with an Isle of man variant .

While the Isle of man variant looks different it still scans as a  proper British passport.

Well we're definitely in the twilight zone!

There are advantages as well. Those in the UK have to pay an extra £2.99 a month if they want to stop seeing ads on prime video even with a prime video subscription .

While they sent an email to me about this new change , I have not seen any ads yet . I suspect this may be because we are in the IOM

and on this point, wife who has a supplementary Amex on my account, tried to apply last night and was turned down as doesnt live in UK.

The supplementary Amex doesn't mean anything. The account is still in your name ..

She will be treated like any other Island resident applying for an Amex. I.e likely to be declined..

Thank you so much for the detailed reply, I did check it out online but the uk bit seemed to rule it out. Yes, a Manx passport could cause issues too. Really helpful.

Let us know how you get on..

Thank you for your input. It’s for my husband who is British but not born in GB. Has held a Manx passport for decades. It would be easier to renew in uk, although not resident there. Bit complex. Did you have claim to uk connection?

Can apply online   to the UK and get it from the UK . These days you don't even need a UK address and the UK passport authority (HMPO)  will send it to your IOM address . The entire process is online if it's a renewal.

The older process of someone verifying your identity on the paper  application  ( if needed ) is also online .. You give their details and they get an email..

    https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport/renew

In the section where it asks Whether you live in the UK select Yes

Also for the passport photo you can get it done at a studio and get a digital photo with a code  ( Morrison photo in douglas know what to do )

You can enter the code given by the studio in the online application. This links your photo with the online application.

I know many people who have done this recently. Some countries create issues with IOM issued British passports when you apply for e visa etc . So easier to have a British passport issued from the UK..

Fair enough. Not huge advantages over a debit card or Revolute card then?

I guess the whole credit card business relies on people spending beyond their means to be profitable.

I have a few for miles/ points but I pay them off in full every month

Provided you time it right your money can sit in the bank longer and earn interest for over a month .

You mentioned about car hire where credit cards are better.. Another area is hotels as some put a hold on the card.   This can take a week or even longer to be released.

Most of my cards do not have fees anyway and they don't charge an interest as long as you pay off in full

Widely used in catering, but in huge quantity. Domestically for home baking and a byproduct of USA food faddism, where yolks are excluded by ladies who lunch because of their alleged high cholesterol content. Omelette made only with egg white is an abomination, but exists across the Atlantic.

Also by those who want to increase protein intake with zero fat like body builders. Friend of mine used to throw away the egg yolks but now uses this .. it's supposed to reduce  food waste..

I've eaten an omelette made with this and it  didn't taste that great ..  I suppose you can add a yolk or two for flavour by mixing  with real eggs ..

I will take unsophisticated in shopping habits as a compliment.  I can’t image a thing more dull than spending anymore than the minimum time required diving into a supermarket.  The idea of thinking about it beforehand and weighing up options on a run of beans makes me shudder.

Time spent in a farm shop or a deli can be a pleasers, but Tesco or the co-op?  In and out with the minimum hassle of brain power thanks.  It’s like hoovering or ironing.  Just a chore.

Will agree with you on that bit.. I try to spend as less time in Tesco as possible.

Usually in and out in around  20 minutes maximum.

  17. 3 hours ago, woolley said:

Takes a lot less time than your comparisons on here. Mrs W can be around a supermarket shop in about an hour (or if I'm with her, 40 minutes). Then that's it for at least a week.

It's not really a question of that. People tend to know what their regular items are. They keep a list of those and add extra products to it as they go along. It isn't at all burdensome. I bet doing this and shopping once a week takes less time than being disorganised and going into the damned place every day which seems like the ultimate pain as well as being the least economical.

Agree...Looks like there are people who would be happy to go to Tesco multiple times a week ..  I am happy with my weekly shops..😀

Are you sure Manx Care actually have two people doing the same job?   The Interim Medical Director ( Dr Hudson?) IS covering the Manx Care job.    Not sure what you mean…

    https://www.manxradio.com/news/isle-of-man-news/medical-director-being-paid-by-manx-care-while-working-in-liverpool/

So why do we have an interim medical director and a medical director at the same time ?  Both seem to be getting paid !!!

That's the crux of the matter - who is paying? If it's Manx Care then it is beholden of the MC CEO to explain why north of 200k is being spent in this manner. The sorry story of MD's on the IOM continues ........

I still cannot understand why Manxcare needs two people for the same job.

Can't the person who is in post here cover what Dr Andhol is doing  for manxcare  at the moment ?

More often, yes, but not every day.

Yes, we shop in multiple locations: IOM: Tesco and Co-op. UK: Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury + Aldi. Spain: Carrefour and the other Aldi.

You'd be foolish to go into any supermarket that has a loyalty card without one. The price differences are massive. Some people seem to think they are cocking a snook at the store by not having one, but they're not. They're just giving the store more money than they need to.

Not everyone, but I suggest most people do a main shop no more than once a week, they use a store loyalty card and they take advantage of price matches and Clubcard offers. They don't do silly things like buying an item at 5% more than it is in the UK when they can actually pay less money for a bigger pack of the same thing on offer at the same as the UK price. I know that SOME will, but there is no accounting for the behaviour of people.

Also the clubcard plus @£7.99  a month gives a 10% discount upto £20 on upto two shops a month.

So if someone spend over £80 a month in Tesco it's worth it ..

Just need to plan ahead and consolidate the shopping into two large ones of around £200 each for maximum benefit.

I know large families who end up spending  much more than this and so have two clubcard plus subscriptions..  so that's  4 × £200 shops covered    and a £80 saving for a £15.98 cost

Clubcard Plus doesn't have a minimum term and you can stop whenever you want (I freeze my payments when I'm away from the island for longer periods )
