we are seeing the social results of both parents needing to work to keep the bills paid so little johnny is left unsupervised to run riot without responsible adult input into their social development, and of course many little johnnys don't have a father figure at home full time to swat them into place.  discipline is backed up by fear , there is no fear in todays namby pamby no corporal punishment at school or home enviroments, pain is a great teacher.

Are you a full-time prick, or just an enthusiastic amateur?

A bit like the police.  Too many people moan about how terrible they are, but it's still the first number they call if they get robbed or assaulted etc.

That doesn't really track though, because there's not any alternative if something dreadful happens. You can still need their help while thinking they're not the best.

  3. I used to occasionally shop in Oddbins in Edinburgh, out of pure convenience. Their prices were absurd compared to other similar retailers, and the selection nowhere near as good. Not really surprised they've gone.

  4. I don't think prioritising the Island's wildlife, beauty and heritage over the vanity project of some tiny-dicked oil wanker daddy's boy would be a particularly bad thing.

But people seem to have managed for the past 20 years off the top of my head there are 3 cafes, 4 pubs within a 100 metre radius people can go to if they want to wait inside get a brew use the toilet

What a daft take. People have had to put up with shit facilities for 20 years so there's no point in creating something decent now? Central transport hubs with ample indoor seating and facilities are an essential part of any large town or city - relying on the goodwill of nearby commercial establishments for seating and toilets is an absolutely ridiculous notion.

The 'bus station' as it is now is an embarrassment. A few shoddy shelters clinging onto the outer rim of a pay and display car park, largely exposed to the wind and rain and cold year round, really make it clear how much of a priority public transport and its users are on the IOM.

Quite a waiting list at private practices as well, I'm lucky as I am with a good private practice and get my twice-yearly appointments.

How many bemoan lack of NHS dentistry but spend money on holidays or other non-essential luxuries?

How on earth are wanting an NHS dental service that's up to scratch and also wanting to go on holiday mutually exclusive? The snobbery is rank - you don't get to deem what's a luxury or not for others from up there on your perch, I'm afraid.

  7. Jesus wept. Nobody is putting blackboard chalk and nicotine into flour mate. UK-milled white and brown flour has mandatory calcium, iron, thiamin and niacin added because that brings it back up to match the nutritional profile of wholemeal flour. Nothing there to worry about. Individual millers add other things, like additional enzymes (to bolster the exact same ones already naturally in the flour) to assist raising, and of course the usual additives to self-raising flour needed to make it rise without the need for separate bicarb.

Wikipedia is free to read, you know.

  9. I used to live in Leeds. The Three Legs is alright, but I'd suggest you go a bit further along and then down Briggate. One of the lanes on the right just before the bottom contains Whitelocks, an absolutely superb pub and a proper slice of history - it's over 300 years old.

What did they do in the supermarkets at the time ? Close off the alcohol aisle ??

I worked in Shoprite in 2000, and the aisles with booze in were roped off outwith the licensed hours.

  11. I think it's something of a shame that one of the only interesting and thoughtful new posters around here in a long, long time has as ever been driven away by the usual inane drivel, sniping and baiting hostility that almost all threads devolve into. As for the suggestion that he's anti-Manx, I've read most things Jack has posted and I think perhaps he's just anti-fuckwit, which I do appreciate will cause a bit of friction on MF.

I do miss a plain loaf.  A denser bread was never seen - and the perfect size and shape for lorne sausage (better not start that argument again!).

Still widely available here on the west coast of Scotland, although it goes stale before you get it back from the shop more often than not!

I struggle with this 'thrust in their face/on the rest of society' comment that is thrown around by some people. Any examples of something being 'thrust in your face' or forced on you?

Aye. It's just the same shite that gets rolled out any time a minority gets a bit too uppity for the old guard's liking. It's been the same for time immemorial. What it really means is "I'm so unbelievably intolerant I can't bear to see this happen in front of me - can't they just go away and let me pretend they don't exist?".
