They still need to actually bring the legislation before Parliament.  So far two promises and no legislation...

Sure, but I was specifically talking about SSP.  I am still not convinced about the arrangements for the self-employed.

They could limit it in the same way they have done with removing the waiting days.  You only get the increased amount if diagnosed with Covid-19 by 111 and issued with a relevant medical certificate.

If they are serious about containing/delaying the spread then they have to ensure that those who have the virus do not attend work and spread it to others.

    1. they have a 80 seat majority........

2.self-employed can claim from day 1 rather than day 8 and with no lower income limit......

3.at a unknown cost.......not going to happen and sick pay is much more than the rock n roll......

    1.  Since when did a budget announcement become a change in legislation?

    2.  I was pleased to hear the confirmation that Government would pick up the tab for businesses employer fewer than 250 people.

    3.  SSP remains at around £94.25 per week (planned to increase to £95.85 on 6 April).  Many people will struggle to live on that why not announce a temporary increase?

    1. when you have a 80 seat majority........

    2. much more than that......

    Quote

£5bn emergency response fund to support the NHS and other public services in England

All those advised to self-isolate will be entitled to statutory sick pay, even if they have not presented with symptoms

Self-employed workers who are not eligible will be able to claim contributory Employment Support Allowance

The ESA benefit will be available from day one, not after a week as now

£500m hardship fund for councils in England to help the most vulnerable in their areas

Firms with fewer than 250 staff will be refunded for sick pay payments for two weeks

    3. cost

Of course there will be many due to sheer weight of numbers, but it is more worrying for older people. Late 70s and above. Good for the government pension actuarial calculations so there's always a silver lining.

boris is keeping the house of lords open for a reason.......

Shouting close the borders is all very well but what are legitimate UK citizens supposed to do? Are they not allowed back into their own country?

These are pretty extraordinary times, I don't think the UK Government can be blamed (at least not yet).

had a few trucks from italy this morning......not one had been checked by the eu.....

So what are the chances that Parliament will be shut down and MPs sent home to self-isolate?

What we could do with now are the 40 new hospitals and the new nurses that were promised during the election plus control of the UKs borders..

    Tick tock....

Only because no airline has had the audacity to go outside the 'groupthink' model.  The same goes for hold baggage.

it been tried.......people don't bother booking.......then a few days before can't be bothered to travel= less passengers + less income.....

It seems you don't get it.

    Your options are:

    1) A nationalised airline to guarantee the service year round running In competition with private UK based airlines. That will require government subsidy.

    2) A nationalised airline running as a protected service to meaning that any subsidy would be minimised.

    3) The free for all that is open skies with airlines coming and going and leaving us in the position we are in today.

A nationalised airline is the ONLY way we can take control of our requirement for assured transport links. As an Island, that is too important (in my opinion) to expose to market forces.

it's a nationally important issue that needs to be properly considered.

    aka a uncontrolled monopoly.......

    no thanks......

I've advocated (in private) a flat-fare system for a decade.  You have to fly to Liverpool in August - £30 (say); you have to fly to your grannie's funeral tomorrow in Liverpool - £30.  The revenue will balance out over time.

The problem with exponential algorithmic fare increases is that you end up with the farcical situation of paying more for a 20 minute flight  to Liverpool or Belfast than an 8 hr flight to the middle east.  There is a price point beyond which seats will remain empty on an aircraft because no-one will pay (unless absolutely desperate and that isn't very often); of course, the accountants who run airlines are happy to run an aircraft half-empty of mediocre fares rather than full of mediocre fares.

    sounds great......shame it doesn't work.....

I think in normal times the rule is perfectly sensible.  It prevents airlines from holding slots that they do not use therefore restricting the flights that can operate in and out of an airport.

Where it becomes daft is not having a clause relating to exceptional circumstances such as coronavirus.

    thats the eu that is......

    Now now.

Don't go spoiling a business as usual running down of the EU with facts.

As we are constantly reminded, brexiteers don't like facts.....

    fact is its daft.......

Depends on the lease costs or purchase price- so a totally hypothetical question.

Let's not guess or speculate, let some people who actually know what they are talking about assess the costs involved.

if its that good then someone would of already set one up......

But if that's what it costs to run a ferry service with a limited market then that's the price you pay - unless it is subsidised by the state. What would you prefer?

    it doesn't......

Agree - having an IOM owned airline is the most important thing - engineering it's profitability is a nicety driven by public expectations.

Disagree about open skies - if one airline, Govt owned or not, has exclusivity, then fares don't need to be high as they will have all of that's routes revenue.

    like the boats.........
