  1. Don't know what the law is here, but they are also illegal to use on public roads and footpaths in the UK

Fairly certain only Douglas Prom has the necessary by-laws in place to allow Segways and the like, which presumably includes hoverboards.

  2. Why? There is no emissions testing here. Having any changes would be of no benefit, and may actually degrade performance or fuel economy.

The emissions testing regime in the UK and much of Europe wouldn't fail on the "real world" NOx figures either. Doesn't mean they won't be forced to do a recall to program out the cheat mode. Further announcement on that due in the next couple of weeks apparently.

Sure some people will say f**k it and not bother, but I bet most will comply with a letter from VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda and send their car in for the recall work. I'll probably say f**k it too if the leasing company will let me put it off until they get it back at the end of the term.

  3. There are some ridiculous deals to be had leasing in the UK at the moment.

Has anyone found a UK firm that will lease to people here and allow you to run the car on Manx plates? I guess not, but would be happy to hear about it if you have

Arnold Clark do on their business leases. Don't know about PCP - probably the same.

  4. So why is it not just being added to the water rates? Why the need for a seperate charge?

Lazy idiots. Should have just been bundled into a combined water and sewerage rate, but they couldn't be arsed working it out so just slapped a nice round number on. They must just enjoy the aggro - surely they knew it would be dubbed the toilet tax and they'd be slammed at every opportunity.

Either that or they're going to fake a u-turn and do something not quite as absurd to quiet the mob and get to do what they planned all along?

  5. To clarify, I set up Google wallet from my PC, then did the VPN to get into the UK store from the phone and make a purchase. Since then it's been working. I even force stopped the Google Play app and cleared all data to see if it still worked or binned me off to the free store but it's been working consistently.

Edit: Think my phone did an update at some point as well. Worth checking if anything needs updating manually.

  6. Logged in to the play store from my PC as well, on Sure broadband. Get full app store same as on my phone both on wifi (same network) and Sure 3G. I spoke to Sure the other day when they popped up for an account review and commented it seems to be working and they indicated it should be fixed for them at least.

The only other change I've made was setting up Google wallet and selecting UK as the billing address when I wanted a paid app. Since then it's been fully working, so it could also be an account issue.

  7. Northwest 200 practice was on today on BBC media player but not for Android on manx telecom users, TT is next ! but not for not if you bought an Android device from manx telecom. But be comforted that th BBC i player website is saying if you downloaded the app in the UK you can use it in the Isle of Man !

As detailed in other theads, set up a UK VPN on the phone, force close the Play Store then open it up again. Agree to the terms and conditions and disconnect the VPN. Full access to the UK store for a while until it times out.

I used www.getukvpn.com as it was one of the first free ones that popped up on google. Works a treat. iPlayer and Sky Go work perfectly from here, it's just getting the app downloaded that's the niggle.

  8. It's wrong in several ways. What happens to this data that is collected on every parent that brings their child to the hospital ? How long is it kept for ? What assurances do we have ? Where do we draw the line on privacy, trust, freedoms and liberty, parental authority and responsibility ? Would those who see no inherent problem here be happy for health professionals or the police to have automatic right of access to their home for instance ?

What data exactly? They ask bugger all really.

  9. Shocked to be asked series of questions by the triage nurse not related to the minor injury, WTF do they need to know if you all live together? for example.

All standard procedure when it comes to kids. Some have complicated family arrangements so they have to make sure that everyone who should be legally informed is kept in the loop. Hence the quesion about whether or not they have a social worker assigned to them etc. To those whose lives are mostly conventional it seems intrusive.

  10. It is a money spinner, some parents that have kids with ADHD get an allowance for "their condition"

    Details?

It is a "care allowance" from social.

I know there are some children that are seriously affected with this condition but I also believe there are a large number where it is simply bad behaviour that the parents cannot control.

Catch up will you? It's called DLA (disability living allowance) and it would not be awarded for ADHD alone. There would be other underlying problems, possibly exacerbated by the ADHD, such as ODD, OCD, ASD, GDD, SPLD etc., etc.

DLA is not awarded for medical conditions, it is based on how much additional assistance a person needs and what they need assistance doing. Some with ADHD alone are awarded DLA, some are not - all depends what their individual needs are.

  11. I heard stories recently about Ramsey Bakery freezing bread ? apparently they are not allowed to do this and have been told off in the past for it but they continue to do so ?

They certainly used to. In my days between proper jobs I did a few stints working at a supermarket. On more than one occasion I've sent back vanloads of bread that arrived still frozen solid.

  12. Just out of interest exactly how many bakeries are left on the Island.

For that matter how many did there used to be and why have so many disappeared given the population increase?

There were plenty of small bakeries on the island, but most were unable to compete with a particular large bakery and went out of business...

  13. Listening to the 5pm news on the radio, Ramsey Bakery announced that they will cease production if the next 4 sailings are cancelled (so thats 2 down), plenty of flour around but they are about to run out of yeast! I would have thought that this could be flown in? rather than close down the bakery?

Jim Duncan is just scare mongering, there is no reason why he can't fly the fresh yeast in.

There is. If it costs him a penny more to do it he won't.

  14. Aha, a colleague locked the keys in a 2005 fiesta on friday. If yours is a 3 door?? we got National windscreens to remove back, side window glass, unlock car, reseal back window, job done. We haven't had the bill yet though. Didn't take him many minutes.

I was thinking of something similar, although my method would involve a phone call to Rambo to see if he'd got any glass for an '04 fiesta, a hammer and a vacuum.

  15. Nice to see Tesco's overnight delivery just arriving at the harbour. Would have been empty shelves in Tesco's today if it was up to the IOMSPC as they cancelled last nights sailing!!

Yes, and the Kalana left Liverpool around 6pm last night. I observed her sheltering off the East coast of Anglesey late last night and sailing North towards the Island this morning. The crews of these Estonian vessels are not afraid to set sail in rough weather in contrast to the crap that we have nowadays at the SPC - they seem able only to hand out flyers at Tesco.

That's the downside of running a combined freight and passenger service. A dedicated freight vessel can sail in much rougher weather than is allowed for passenger vessels. I guess the reliability factor didn't come into it when there was no alternative. There were plenty of people saying the Ben was a bad idea at the time for this very reason.
