Covers Recovered 1 : The Vaselines
Ok after the other night's Cavalcade of Covers I thought the next few posts could be the mirror image - the orignals of songs that are more famous when done by someone else. So, first up... The Vaselines - Jesus Doesn't Want Me As A SunbeamThe Vaselines were Glaswegian Indie Popsters who were particularly beloved by Kurt Cobain. Nirvana covered a number of the band's tunes - Molly's Lips, Son of a Gun and this one which turns up on Unplugged In New York and there is a version on the new With The Lights Out box set. The Vaseline's mainman - Eugene Kelly went on to lead Captain America and Eugenius (and managed to play the mainstage at Reading two years running by default after Teenage Fanclub invited Eugenius to play a song in the middle of their set one year, and followed up as guest guitarist with Nirvana the next). But it is the Vaselines which carries the most resonance. In common with many of their contemporaries (like The Pastels and the BMX Bandits) their music has dated somewhat, however the gentle despair of their songs lives on.
