Thoughts Inspired By The Cutter
One of the weird things about joining the digital revolution is that suddenly I've gained a knowledge of the vastness of my record collection. Before when someone asked "how many cds do you have?" the answer was simple "lots". But my definition of a lot is different to another persons. To someone with 50 cds 200 is a lot. To me and my friends its a start. Now, thanks to iTunes and iPod I can quantify lots - it is precisely 27,203 tunes. Of course I've barely begun to transfer my vinyl into digital format. I know for example that it would take me nearly 72 days to listen to each track one after the other non-stop and I know that at any given moment I carry 10 days worth of music around with me on my iPod. But what these stats don't tell you is why despite this choice do I sometimes choose to listen to one song six times in succession? Like this one, for example - Echo & the Bunnymen - The CutterEspecially when it is a song I have known and loved for 20 years. But, tonight on the bus home it just clicked. Anyway as I listened to it again and again I learned the following things - 1. The Will Sargent's guitar sounds like the bastard offspring of bagpipes and sitar. 2. I could not make this record even if I could sing and play guitar, really well. 3. Not even if I played a kazoo through a vocorder. 4. The Bunnyman should have been stadium rock stars. 5. If you described U2 to a deaf person but couldn't use the words "pompous", "overblown" and "crap" they'd imagine the Bunnymen. 6. There are some things from the Eighties worth reviving. 7. The Cutter is a perfect track. (After I got home I also discovered that Google can't find a working Bunnymen site that has been updated since 1998)
