  1. But surely it's about more than a simple RoI on the balance sheets? It's about a RoI via the spend it brings and jobs it creates (albeit temporary) by having production done on-Island? The plan is surely to recoup the investment (which is an investment and can be sold) via contribution to the economy of the Island than a simple black and red on a balance sheet?

There's going to have to be some spectacular spending on the island to wipe off the 17 million already written off the initial investment !!!!

i think you will find it's more like 24 million...... or should that be 29 million?

    Say what now?

  3. I think you will find if the SP went tits up the craft would revert to the hands of the government as unless I am wrong they are the surety for the loan so therefore could be seized, on the other subject I think compared to Dohle the SP is a small time leasure boat outfit so would therefore not be able to sustain a price war. I think we are about to enter some interesting times as far as sea travel goes on this fair isle with the end result of the aussies going down under.

They'll do what EuroManx did and not have them on-Island/within our waters when the bomb goes bang.

  4. They already control healthcare, education, security, transport, and justice, and reach far beyond what it necessary to the practical running of a country, so it seems odd that they should not be concerned with the emotional wellbeing of the people.

I'd say that there is some reasoning behind the provision of healthcare, education, security, transport, and justice.

I would reason that if the government makes provisions for people's physical health, transport needs, and education, then it should also be concerned with the mental wellbeing and quality of life of its citizens, but for some reason it does not consider this a very high priority. Ideally the government would not be responsible for these things, but considering the nature of our current system it seems odd to me that it should not be.

The bottom line is that leisure is an important part of our economy and good facilities facilitate good economic development.

If you build it, they will come.

If you don't build it, they will, um... park their cars there.

  5. That is a prime development site, but unless somebody wants to develop it it will stay as it it is.

Why was the IOMSPC building knocked down? There must have been a good reason, like it was falling down, kind of thing.

Weren't they going to build some 7 storey glass building with confrencing facilities? I'm seeing a theme here...

  6. My money is on the Sefton group somehow sneaking in with the preferred tender and erecting "Exciting new 4* hotel development coming soon" signage but continuing to run it as a carpark until the Government give them a grant to do something.

The above business plan may also be substituted for the Castle Mona / Summerland / Walpole Ave Sites

LOL, brilliant - we're on to them!

I wonder which will be built on first. The bus station or the Summerland site.

    Place your bets........

Not so much a race between the tortoise and the hare, but just two tortoises.

  7. If in say 2 years , there has been no movement or the project is shelved for no good reason, then I will join you in criticism. But until then I am living in hope that i don't have too, does it hurt to be positive about something for a change?

    <_<

correct john it does no harm to live in hope.

exactly what the sefton groups PR machine has set out to achieve whilst doing nothing except biuld its land bank.

If Sefton do have a PR machine - it's not very good given that everyone seems to be excited, but rolling their eyes when they hear Sefton Group are behind it!

The again, what PR agency can get round the lack of inaction and spin this any other way? ;)

  8. However on my recent visits to the Palace cinema lately I have been surprised at the low number of people watching films.

That is more due to the numbskulls who run the place - as an example, Watchmen, a highly anticipated film which topped the box-office charts around the world after its release was given ONE screening at the Palace. This screening sold out without being advertised. The Palace have no plans to show the film again.

Plus the place is a grotty, smelly pit run by pensioners and staffed by surly rejects from Marilyn Manson's band.

Watchmen has been on already?! Oh **** :(

Hurry up and build THE WAVE!

  9. I'm all for having a project like this in the Isle of Man. If it's private money as well, then who is complaining.

My reservations are, that for a long time I've heard people say build a multi-plex , bowling alley, etc like they have in England. Yet will that work in the Isalnd. I don't know. Sometimes though I do get the feeling that there's a mentality among the locals that just because there are facilities like this across the water then we should have them over here. If we can fill them and someone makes a profit then tally-ho away we go.

However on my recent visits to the Palace cinema lately I have been surprised at the low number of people watching films. Are there enough people out there who would support something like 'The Wave'. And I mean in the long-term, when the euphoria dies down and the novelty wears off, not the short-term

Yup - a market of 80,000 people with little other choice. I think some people stop frequenting places such as The Palace Cinema, because the facilities just aren't up to scratch.

I was lucky to be a presentation for the Wave. Looks amazing.

Oh God what to they teach on architecture courses these days?

It's the same old design every time whether it's Tesco's, a swmming pool, or a sports centre. Basically a big shed with a wavy roof.

They teach people not to design things that look like Summerland - we need to remember what was there before!! ;)

Just be glad it's not the usual bland Manx render and whitewash that looks like sh*te after its first winter (the Court House for example or Piccadilly Apartments up the Summerland end of the prom).

  11. I would still like to see a sort of mini indoor theme park/fun fair like they have in shopping centres in England and a big arcade with many classic games.Weren`t the Crescent owners supposed to be building one in Strand Street when the Crescent closed down? - maybe Woolies building?

    You're kidding. Right?

Another hiatus at the Lord Street site then - would be a far better place for the facilities IMHO.

Anything like this is great news, and they've obviously been doing a lot of work - but with so much land ready for development in Douglas under their ownsership - they need to be forced to do something!
