  1. so we finally all got here, and yes it has rained a lot since our arrival , but we were expecting that, and so far we feel happy here , long many it continue and now a question about work permits how easy are they to obtain? if you want to be self-employed
  2. if you dont live here full time, you can get a bank account without an NIE , just with a passport ( well Brits can anyway)
  3. worse than waiting for the GPO in 1974 to install a phone??? oh nooooooooooooooo
  4. For me, setting up a Spanish bank account was the easiest account i have ever opened , all they wanted was my passport and my old uk address, they even suggested i had my bank debit card sent to the same branch, where i collected 7 days later . they didn't ask me anything - a bit of a surprise really and mine wasn't set up all that long ago, never really needed it here because we kinda just used my partner's account. She set her account up years ago again with no fuss or bother.
  5. ok thanks, thats worth bearing in mind what about personal accounts, i assume they are a bit quicker to set up?
  6. https://www.gov.im/categories/travel-traffic-and-motoring/drivers-and-vehicles/vehicle-registration-and-licensing/ useful info on the Gov site
  7. No its not, but i now see that it is pointless engaging with you. You add nothing to the thread, you just feel the need to troll here ( and probably other threads too) , all in all, an epic waste of time. IMO edit: I have just discovered that this forum has the option to put anyone on ignore ! You're welcome ! TTFN
  8. Si, its siesta time here at the time of posting this ¬ ¬ Last Sunday Dis Name posted this on a thread "The road is a mess, something should be done The road is a mess, the workers are too slow The road is a mess, they're spending tax payers money This road is much better now,but it cost too much. Zzzzzzzzzz " I think his finger got stuck on the z key today , again.
  9. its a skill i tell ya, lol and yes, time will tell, if the bug will still bite ! Generally speaking: High Taxes () never work, the "poor" are always the ones who suffer. Why? because the "rich" can always leave. The "poor" can't. so they get left with the higher tax rates ( this happens all over the world ) which then reduces their disposable income , less money for them to spend, the more the economy shrinks. Lower taxes encourages so much , more people start businesses in lower tax economies than in higher tax economies. I have noticed a "form" of this already from complaints (on forums) about the prices of the Steam_Racket ferry co, £300 to £450 for a return crossing for a car, two adults, two children from the UK , (when you can go to France for example, for 20% to 40% of that figure) is not an incentive for tourists/holiday makers to come to the Island . Lower prices on the ferry would certainly help "travel costs" to & fro
  10. Point 1 No, i state as i have found it, from doing my research ( i dont live there yet, so i dont know for sure that is the case) point 2, yes ok i can see that Point 3, yes , even through the fog, i think i can see that being the case Point 4 , Yes, point taken
  11. Gov never votes for a) its own demise, b) to make itself smaller of any kind , c) for any kind of monetary reduction. its the same all over the world
  12. on another thread i saw this discussed , maybe this is contributing to the Island's "woes" Woolley There is a distinction between people moving here to swell the government workforce and those coming to work in private industry and employ others. The former cost and the latter contribute. Rushen Spy 100% agreed. Unfortunately, the former massively (disproportionately) outnumber the latter. taken from https://www.manxforums.com/forums/index.php?/topic/64664-zurich-international-redundancies/page/5/
  13. No, in summary i am going to move there and watch the TT when its on, i am also going to ride my bike , walk my dogs and go out for fish n chips and the odd curry. i may also start some sort of business venture , later on down the line read what i actually wrote " the Gov is pushing is Digital Tech , ie Blockchain based technology" - ie not me , but it's the Gov doing it ! In the meantime i will defer to your years of Island knowledge as to how you will solve the " huge unemployment problem and protect the future of (the) our economy" when are the next parliament elections? put yourself down as a candidate , you will have my vote!
  14. Yes i have engaged the trolls and by doing so have said too much , but thanks for your support that i should fit right in i was waiting & waiting for your approval
  15. My "mistake" in my 2nd post was to mention the dreaded "T" word (tax) , i see that now. Why? well it has "triggered" a couple of people, it feels like many years of your problems all being focused in on me. Wow. Yes it did say i that i might start up a business , you chose to fixate on the Gov mandated Corporation tax aspect of that and yes that might be an incentive to think about doing just that ( those are the rules passed by the Manx Gov , not me, take it up with them if you don't agree with their policies) . What about the employment that would be created , would that be of benefit to the Island? . I mean people coming to the Island, setting up businesses and creating employment surely that's not what the Island needs ! It seems to me that most of your issues concern things that your Gov has put in place (not me) My suggestion would be, take it up with them. Or Vote with your feet and leave (extreme, i know) if you dont like the Island rules and don't want to be a part of changing them. re your comment " In fact finance is now the dwindling industry and the future is still very much to be decided. " You may well be correct on that one, time will tell . One aspect of the future that (i believe) the Gov is pushing is Digital Tech , ie Blockchain based technology . If the Island could get a jump start on that ( and get it's collective head on board with it ) that would be a big big game changer for the Island for sure. re your comment I also fully agree that the decision to move here is and rightly should be entirely your own, I was merely offering my experience of people who have done so for similar reasons. They rarely seem happy with the place and despite a good 40 years of them benefitting us we're still in the financial shit. i'm really hoping you dont work in the Island's Tourist dept or the Island's "New Business development dept" i can't say for sure today that we will be "happy with the place" only in time will i be able to say that. Watch this space! heck, we haven't even moved there yet. and re you last part of "we're still in the financial shit. " You've spent the time writing in response to my OP, have you spent any time coming up with solutions to help get the island out of the situation you have described? Have you voiced them to your Gov? do you want to be part of the solution or part of the problem? For me, i want to be a part of the solution if i can and i want to add to any community that i live in. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- @finlo Nope, i am currently in Spain ( but i like to as much research as i can) - the internet is great for that !
  16. a couple of folk on here and others n PM's have said " you have to be a bit thick-skinned" to be on the MF I guess i am, because i will engage your post ( even though you are trolling here/me ) 1. My "motivation" is all mine for moving here and of course i know that public services cost money. The Gov will do ok by me by way of "consumption tax" (VAT and other taxes) . ie whatever i do, even moving here , the Gov will get their share. I did not set the tax rates/criteria up for this country and everyone is free to benefit from them, the Gov is looking for ways to make up the deficit. Why? because the IOM is not the tourist centre that it once was and it will never be again, airline travel then low-cost airline travel saw to that. Hence they are changing the face of the island. You only have to look at the financial and online services based here to see the "changing face" of the island. (sidebar: are you sending similar "messages" to the banks, and other industries that have settled here ? ) sidebar2: should the Island be back as in its "heyday" of pre war times ??? 2. So yes i do want to move to the Island and no, i don't have to work but i will have to operate within the prescribed tax rules ( like everyone else) - You need to face the fact that the IOM Gov has set the island up as a low-cost tax entity . it has been done this way for a reason , they "need" to attract people to the island , whether you like it or not, its the future. If i stay where i am, i will pay tax to the Spanish Gov (then the Island gets nothing from me), or i could not do that. Afterall, its my choice to stay or move away from here. I may well, after i have settled on the Island, decide to startup a business ( Actually, there is a big chance of that happening), in which case i would need employees ( Island employees) now i know that's of little interest to you as you would prefer me and others like of me not to come here, but maybe others on the Island would like the opportunity and the employment. 3. Yes i am a biker, been riding nigh-on 40 years now and the TT is a unique event and for it to be on my doorstep, so to speak, is just epic ! 4. What you think about what i should or shouldn't do as regards to where i live is of no interest to me, my original post did not solicit an answer as to whether i should move to the island or not. i had already decided that i (we) would. As to the comment " if you chose your new home by more virtuous criteria than where requires its poor to subside you the most. " you might want to take that up with the Government (they made the rules) if you believe for any moment that me coming to the island will in anyway adversely affect those good folk you mentioned. i actually think it will be a net benefit for the Gov/Island. Why? because i wont take anything from the Gov. The Gov will get more from me in the short term, and possibly a lot more in the medium term. i trust the above will clear up your mis-understanding of..hmmm... well.. all of your points.
  17. this is very true, the potencia i have ( and need) makes for some epic energy bills ( inc consumption of course) in the summer months
  18. Really? even though we are both English, born in England and have UK Passports? (Not that we are looking to work there, and, if we ever did decide to, we would set up a corporation, and work under that)
  19. Its not me that is mentioning the extra cost of everything here, other posters are just telling what to expect and so i respond to them, why wouldn't i? it is interesting to me also, from the OP, We are looking for somewhere to rent, but we have two dogs, which is the tricky bit. Hence the reason for this post in the first place We prefer to rent first, only because we don't know the island, but if we can't find a suitable rental in time, i will just have to buy a place because we are moving to the Island , one way or another (Rental or Purchase) .
  20. ok, so if i buy a car which is already Manx registered then no Man test required, correct? and what about the car tax? is it transferable ? (unlike the UK nowadays) and if the tax has expired? easy to re tax it? @John Wright
  21. @John Wright Is the Manx test just like the UK's MOT test? and what are "replaying costs" ? is there a "main" site where most people tend to advertise their vehicles for sale?
  22. I'm assuming most people take their UK car/or buy one in the UK, then register it on the Island? when they first move over i'm assuming that to buy a "local" car is the wrong way to go? (overpriced? not that much choice?) am i correct?
