  1. For someone who doesn't teach in DESC or Music Service Manxman you sure do seem to know a lot about this kind of thing. I do respect your previous posts and agree with a lot of what you have said.........particularly griping continually about teachers.......like a lot of professions they have had to deal with massive change in the delivery of lessons and assessment. The survey appears to highlight discontent in the teaching staff not only in Music Service but many other schools, something that agreed needs followed up to ascertain whether this is a genuine cause for concern or just a gripe/group personal vendetta at a person in charge. How do you realistically gain an insight therefore into the genuineness of such a damning report into management confidence.........surely independant assessment? Is that not what guarantees a neutral approach? Internal follows up are too connected to personalities and mates, (ie, if there has been long outstanding issues that HR or senior leaders have been aware off, have they been addressed by the Director etc. or just passed over) just saying, but if it affects the operational output of a department/school then the reason why needs sorted and learnt from. This is a really basic thing.
  2. You’re having a laugh if you’re referring to music service are you? Evidence would be in a full independent inspection, but from what info I can see that hasn’t happened for years. And with this resultant survey would that not now be necessary?
  3. Sorry Stu. This new report has nothing to do with whether the individual efforts at getting some enjoyment out of music is a valiant goal. It’s to do with teachers being happy in the workplace. Instigated by government and now showing some very concerning workplace environments if to be believed…..will anything be done about it? I humbly ask that you find out?
  4. Quote from article ”The Music Service consistently recorded the worst scores, ranking bottom for staff confidence in management decision making, management being aware of the challenges faced by stafff, senior management being honest in their communication with staff, team management and overall happiness at work.” I’m sure their manager is delighted at the staff who have supported their efforts….
  5. Interesting article relevant to the post. https://gef.im/2022/01/05/how-happy-are-our-teachers/
  6. This is refreshing to see. Seems quite an experienced fella and a good idea. Free lessons and instruments. Bit of a no brainer if you’ve young ones looking a new hobby..... https://www.manx.net/tv/mt-tv/watch/88719/isle-of-man-brass-academy Well done in giving something back to the community and he’s a qualified teacher too.
  7. This is great, I love that the assumption that a few mates agreeing to something together makes it right, so it provides an opportunity to bash my suggestion as wrong. ok, let’s go again: 1. Music is a good thing 2. no one said do away with it 3. my suggestion is it needs done differently... 4. The Music Service isn’t the only thing that needs to change post corona by the way! here’s a case study that helps us understand perhaps what by a google search has happened elsewhere. A success story no less! https://www.musicmark.org.uk/news/from-closure-to-creation-gareth-churcher-cornwall-music-service-trust/ No point in being nasty in reply back, so I’ll just keep sharing the idea, which seems very uncomfortable for a few obviously “associated” posters.
  8. Ermm read this drunkenmonkey, https://www.gov.im/about-the-government/departments/education-sport-and-culture/education-improvement-service/school-self-review-and-evaluation-reports/ “In order to test out the judgements schools are making about themselves and ensure rigour and objectivity, a validator from an organisation called Graham Reeves Ltd then visits the school with an adviser from the Department of Education, Sport and Culture.” Jeepers and this company is from Bromley. Bet that ain’t cheap. https://www.grahamreeves.co.uk/contact No record of any inspection on there either.... Now where’s the drink....I am enjoying the replies. plus 20% is a figure off a website....... is it really that many??? Who knows apart from the dept as no public records available?
  9. No time Neil sorry, gotta feed the horses down on the prom, plus make some scones down in cregneash whilst teaching some Manx.... Wonder where red sky went? All of a sudden they disappear when asked when this service was last externally inspected???? Etc etc etc. Wonder which part they played/SANG in the video?
  10. Oops, seemed to have hit a bit nerve there..... no need to hurl insults as my view is something that perhaps will be agreed by many others in that there is need for a clear out of many who simply are not worth their money. No one is discounting the worth of music, but perhaps a different way of doing it, like setting up an independent service outside of govt, not including taking of taxes to pay for it, would be a better way of doing things. Since you know so much about this red sky how many kids do the service actually teach as a percentage of the whole school population?, when we’re they last inspected externally as teachers outside of an inside DEC monitoring system? (If that is what they are) and where have they been teaching? oh and by the way there are many organisations who do videos in their own time, non-argument.???? Over to you. Try to be a bit nicer though.
  11. I’ll just leave this here as an example of what our taxes are paying for. Nice sentiment, but is there an almost sneering look of satisfaction at the prospect of having 6 months off work on full pay........ ironic tune to be singing. https://youtu.be/5a4qZnRWHQY
  12. http://www.iomtoday.co.im/article.cfm?id=55480&headline=Cannan to seek extension to financial support&sectionIs=NEWS&searchyear=2020 fairly strong responses from the large majority of comments in the article asking why the civil servants aren’t taking a hit too and getting furloughed like everyone else......seriously are our teachers, MNH, tram workers council workers who are off at home really working? so maybe my original post was not a single view but as time has passed we can see things as they really are........ Here’s a couple of examples for those not bothered to read. I work in the private sector and haven't stopped working since Covid. I count myself lucky in many ways but I'm also working 11 -12 hour days from home so I think i'm earning my security. I work from home at my dining room table and have to watch my neighbour who works for Douglas Borough either gardening or sunbathing all day everyday. If i go out to hang out the washing I have to endure him bragging about doing zilch. It's not on and time it stopped It's also time to start considering furloughing hundreds of govt employees, such as in MNH, railways and other non-essential areas. The private sector should not be paying the price for this pandemic alone nor lacking financial support just to keep non-front line govt employees in clover. Also, it's time to switch to zero based budgeting and stop the likes of Longworth wasting money converting steam engines and diesel engines. Any payment over £5000 should be being approved/cleared by treasury and much larger expenditures being revisited by Tynwald.
  13. Absolutely, but hardly being in this all together, when teachers left on island have been in schools looking after "essential user" students on rota though? Bit more to it all than just sending a few powerpoints to students Declan? Seems like a handy wee jolly away whilst on full pay................
  14. I have also been reliably informed that there are a number of teachers throughout the island who requested special leave of absence to go back to the other islands on FULL PAY before the lockdown was put in place and it was granted!!!!!! Not great for those teachers left on island to cover the schools......
