  1. Dunno, but I've copied the questions below. All were to be answered "yes" or "no".

    1) Have you experienced congestion and delay at this junction on a regular basis?

    2) Do you regularly use an alternative route to avoid this junction at peak congestion times?

    3) Do you feel exposed to risk when negotiating the existing mini-roundabouts?

    4) Do you feel exposed to risk when crossing the road at this junction?

    5) Do you believe an improvement scheme is necessary at this location?

    6) Do you understand why the Department is promoting the preferred option?

    7) Do you support the Department's recommendation to seek planning approval for the preferred scheme?

There was a space for "further suggestions, comments, or to expand on the responses".

Thanks for that. Clearly avoiding the key question:

    8) Do you think 4 million pounds of public money is justified on this single junction?

  2. Are the plans still on display?

Dunno. I was down the sea terminal last week, and didn't see it. Not sure if it's hidden away?

Why isn't the whole planning process online? Be dead easy to do, stick em up on a page and allow people to register their objections or support for a plan.

  3. Is that why the DoT have paid so much attention to assisting safe pedestrian movement in their QB design? (this is meant as irony....). as far as I can see their crayon drawing does not show anything to help little old ladies, children and everyone else to get across the road. Assume they are worried that if they put in crossings or lights it would slow the traffic.

Roundabouts are crap for pedestrians and cyclists, the only real solution is to put under passes in, but that'll probably not be possible because of the river and the already busted budget.

  4. Why do you have to wait for every one else to plough ahead before you follow suit though? If you value the principal behind the argument, and you're confident that you can manage with just one, surely you can get rid of one of them regardless of what everyone else is doing.

Your right, I don't. I'll probably flog one. Quite fancy a van as a 2nd car in fact, be able to shove the bikes in it :)

The important thing is that I'm not using it though, even walked in today in the rain. Hero!

I finally watched the 'woman who stopped traffic' series, it's been sat on my sky+ for ages. Interesting, particularly the last show where the city had gone to great lengths to reduce traffic, multiple very well specified park & rides, dedicated cycle lanes, bus lanes and still the cars flowed. One of the successes of that show was demonstrating that often it's just ignorance that stops people walking. People simply aren't aware how quick it is to walk vs a car over a short distance, that a 10 min ride in a car including parking can often be done in 5 mins walking.

They also focused a lot on the school run, where parents said their kids couldn't walk because it was too dangerous. It was pointed out that not walking and dying of heart desease was a much larger killer these days.

  5. Bollocks. That's the trouble with you anti-car lot, all stick and no carrot.

The carrot is that you reduce the number of cars, and we all have a better quality of life.

I'm not that anti-car, I've got two myself. I just fekking hate driving, its a nightmare. There's too many cars on the roads. I can manage with one car, I've only got two cos it's cheap and convenient. If everyone else managed with one, I'd happily do it.

And it's this sort of sentiment that drives the price. If enough people believe the price will go up, it'll go up. It's close to a dead cert for commidity traders. 50% annual inflation of your investment? Yes please!

Greenpeace should invest in oil, the rising prices have done far more for reducing consumption than anything they've ever done.

  7. Isn't that just wishful thinking - what evidence is there for that? Car use is going up not down and even more vehicles are being registered each year. There were 73496 registered on the island last year.

Fuel consumption down 20% in 2008:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtm.../npetrol111.xml

Car sales down 8% in 2008:

    http://www.just-auto.com/article.aspx?ID=95030

UK DOT figures show 1st qtr 2008 traffic dropped 2% on average, and that's without the higher rises we've seen in the 2nd qtr of the year. See the price is climbing nearer $150 today...

  8. With car use likely to decline over the coming years, do we really need the marginally extra capacity this will provide? The problem exists for less than 2 hours a day, yet the DoT wants us to endure 2 years of roadworks?

Exactly, the money would be far better spent on reducing car use, be it public transport, cycling facilities, car shares, whatever.

  9. The whole idea is mad! It will never work. The problem is caused by conjestion and it does not matter how many lanes you have going into a roundabout, it is still single file traffic.

Having cars actually on the roundabout will help, but it'll just move the conjestion into douglas. This design is better than the current two roundabouts.

The islands will help pedestrians too. Nowt for cycles, of course.

Worth £4mil of our dosh? Na.

  10. Hehehehe If it's causing this much feedback already wait until you see the drawings at the public display

I'll put £5 on them having being drawn using crayons.

And of course, no provision for cyclists. Wonder what the pedestrian provisions will be, current QB has naff all and with no pavement on 3 of the roads coming into the QB, it's a very bad spot indeed.

  11. There are proposals to build a large roundabout, in an effort to ease congestion and prevent accidents.

Do you think that this will stretch as far as the Tesco roundabout?

Personally I would prefer a flyover and underpasses - would look like better value for £4 million (still it's a lot less than those runway extensions).

A flyover? On the holy stretch of road that is the TT course? Are you mad? We cannot have sensible solutions on holy ground.

£4m is bloody silly, but the whole place does need flattening and one big roundabout put in. Or we could all just drive less for free..

  12. Yeah i've just moved some of the more popular food and drink posts in here from the general forum. If there are other older ones you want moving just bump them and one of the mods will move them in here.

    Cheers

Woah, so you have, nice one :)

Didn't see em because I'm on 'view new posts' view.

  13. Hello,

The admins and mods have decided to open a new forum for people interested in the food and drink scene in the Isle of Man.

Over the last year there has been an ever increasing number of posts dotted around the forum regarding restaurants, cafes and pubs that can sometimes get missed. Some of these forum posts have been very helpful for people wanting to have a bite to eat or go out for a drink on the Island.

With that in mind we are pleased to announce the new Food and Drink Forum. This is a place to post your experiences of local restaurants, bars and cafes and also post any cooking and recipe tips you may have.

    Happy eating and drinking.

Nice one. Be good for people to bump some of the old ones and get em moved in here.

  14. Pah..you don't know what you're missing out on. Them thingies seem to be hand build - just imagine: we could teach kids at school how to build nitros powered engines - invaluable engineering skills to be learned here! (I might settle for
instead - sure to liven up the curriculum...)

Or we could teach em to build something useful?
