"Young Driver event promises to be a great night"

"FERRARIS, Porsches and rally cars along with food and live music makes the Sea Terminal the place to be this Friday (February 29) for young drivers.

Young Driver 2008 is a high-profile road safety campaign aimed at drivers aged 16 to 25.

However, the event, which runs from 7pm until 9pm, is open to everyone.

Local band Stone Creation will entertain the crowd and the event will feature displays from car and tyre dealers and others involved in the motor trade, along with a crash scene re-enactment put on by the emergency services.

There will also be one or two well-known faces from the world of local motorsport present on the night.

The launch provides young drivers with the chance to sign up for the year-long campaign – including participation in a Track Day at Jurby in May, being staged in partnership with Duke, and a Driving Skills Challenge at the Grandstand in July.

Those who sign up on the night will receive a voucher for free refreshments and some Young Driver 2008 merchandise.

Transport Minister David Anderson said: 'Young motorists in this age group are involved in one quarter of all road accidents in the Isle of Man and the goal of the campaign is to raise driving standards and encourage better attitudes towards driving and vehicle maintenance.

'In particular, we want to give drivers who have just passed their tests the chance to further improve their skills.

'We realised that we needed to make the campaign something that young drivers would want to be involved with. To capture their imagination we needed to move away from what some might describe as the "traditional" road safety message and create something that appealed, that captures their imagination and which provides them with some practical experiences.

'It's very much about the social side of the campaign – the launch on Friday with live music, the Track Day at Jurby and Driving Skills Challenge, whilst to bring the campaign to a close we are planning a big event, again with live music, which will hopefully take place at the Villa Marina in the autumn.

'So we're looking for as many motorists as possible aged 16 to 25 to come to the Sea Terminal on Friday and see what we're all about and help make Young Driver 2008 a great success.'

Young Driver 2008 is unique to the Island and is a joint initiative between the road safety unit, the police, fire service and ambulance service

Will they have a skid pan on Circus Beach?

Just had another thought - this must have been arranged when Steam Packet were not going to have an evening service, 'cos Ben was going into dry dock.

The evening service is still running, so there will be a bit of a mess up in the Sea Terminal until the ship has been loaded for its 1945 departure.
