Entertainment!
In My inaugural post I mentioned that the title of this blog comes from a line in the Gang of Four song "Return the Gift" from their 1980 debut album Entertainment! Those of that spend our too much of our time trawling through internet forums will know that a staple thread of these endeavours is "What are your favourite albums of all-time ... ever!" And each time I post a different list, but 5 albums are guaranteed inclusion - Pet Sounds, Revolver, Screamedelica (all of which I guess you'll know), Pere Ubu's Pennsylvannia (which will be the subject of a later post) and Entertainment! I first bought a 2nd hand vinyl copy of the album in London in the late 80's for the astronimcal sum of £18 - the most I had ever paid for a record - and it has more than repaid me over the years. The Gang of Four were Leeds based agit-prop post punks who met at the local Poly began dressing in khaki and making taut danceable but New Wave influenced music. There is a real tension in the way the twin vocal lines bounce off one another as Andy Gill's brutal, angular guitar chops a swathe through the insistent bass and drum parts. It is wonderful. Listen to the two new tracks below then begin to spot echos of the Gang's sound can be heard in some of the best current music - Radio 4, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party to name a few.
