At the junction of Drumgold/Nelson/Market st was another linked Pub, The Shepherd Inn, roughly where the Premier Inn is now, as it's a flock of sheep, surely Sheepflockers would be a better description đ¤Ģ -

Just for balance, the Guttery was more likely the reference to the Gutteries,---abattoirs in the area, It links from Cattle Market st to Howard slip. There were at least 3 tannerys in the close area, the last being Fayles yard on Well rd hill. Mostly Herring processing was done close by the harbours, as in Peel, in Douglas the Herring houses were on South Quay, It seems daft to ship the fish from the harbour, by horse cart, all the way to Market St for processing. In later years the Cattle market was behind the Saddle pub, butchers would buy and employ drovers to drive the beasts to Market st for slaughter, the hides to the tannerys. Ths Drovers would retire to the Victoria Tavern in Drumgold st, tying their droving dogs outside, hence "Dogs Home" this is but one tale told with bellys to the bar. -
Could they not do what the Government does and rent in some "Pay to condemn" surveyors" ? did the church not also do this in the North?. But then again, both failed when the light was shone on them. đ¤

Generally souvenir and coffee shops, taxis and coach owners are the ones who benefit from cruise visits, pubs and restaurants very little, side benefit, charity shops do fine from crew members as customers. People employed to promote the visits also benefit.đ¤ There was a prog a few years back on Liners to Shetland, essentially saying the returns were poor considering the outlay spent on dredging, berthing upgrades etc, sounds like something our Gov would excell at

Thats a subjective choice, i have tried neither, price though is a different matter, not all Local produce is better quality to justify a higher price, Lamb for ex, best I ever bought was NZ lamb. Tesco today had a large Noa's bread display at the entrance , I had a look, saw the price, walked away, I kept obbo on the display as we shopped, I didnt see a single pick up. -

It simply is true in my experience, cheese, milk and butter, local always dearer, Manx meats have recently reduced prices, still ahead of imported though. Flour? best quality and price M&S where bread flour flies off of the shelves. Best spuds, price and quality Tesco and COOP. -

Sadly home produced goods tend to be more expensive than imported with shipping surcharge đ¤ -
I drank in a bar that Josef Karma used, a nice chap but we had a Mate there who some swine had convinced that if you made eye contact with him, you would end up buying his drinks all night, even if you made contact through the mirror behind the bar, ah, such fun we had đ

Just had a walk through of the new Tesco on Victoria Road, ex Shoprite, they have one of those automatic water misters to keep the fish fresh. Just before you go on, you hear the sound of distant waves and the smell of the sea. When you approach the dairy section, you hear cows mooing and catch the scent of freshly mown grass When you approach the egg shelf, you hear hens cluck and cackle and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying. The bread section has the enhanced aroma of fresh baking bread The Vegetable Department features the smell of fresh buttered turnips. In future though, I will be buying my Toilet Paper in the COOP .
