  1. There has been bragging about how the Isle of Man Government has managed to secure a huge amount of reserves over the years (it could do little else considering the VAT bonanza that went on for so long undetected - there is only so much money that can be thrown at such as IRIS, MEA and other such £millionaire making projects) The Isle of Man Government should use the reserves, not impose further charges on the public. The reason they will not use the reserves is because it is seen as their (along with all the Government paid workers) money...,,their salaries for the future.....their lump sum retirement wedge........their pension pot......flowing in like the tide until the very day, way in the future, when they die. Some of the sums being paid to retiring civil servants and other Government paid workers are obscene. There is no way these people have earned anything like those sums. The only way to stop this outrageous plundering of the reserves in a democracy is to vote in people who will have the balls to do something about it. At present there are just a handful of people who have the decency to stand up to what is happening.
  2. I wouldn't be surprised if these guys fully endorsed Margaret Thatcher's poll tax too.
  3. The next Legislative Council election is March 2015. Dudley BUTT. Robert Philip BRAIDWOOD, Edward Alan CROWE and Alexander Frank DOWNIE are current encumbents on those cosy seats. I don't think they'll want to get off the gravy train that easily. Mind you, each one of them is a toilet taxer. Only the lad Turner on LegCo had the balls to listen to the people of the Isle of Man. His decency might cost him another 5 years on a guaranteed £1000 a week but at least he will be able to hold his head up high when he walks down Strand Street.
  4. I'm not sure if the Hansard vote has been posted, but here it is anyway: Source - Hansard, Tynwald 19th February 2014 page 1058: That the Sewerage Charge Order 2014 be approved [sD 2014/0040] In the Keys – Ayes 16, Noes 8 FOR Mr Quirk Mr Ronan Mr Crookall Mr Anderson Mr Bell Mr Singer Mr Quayle Mr Teare Mr Cregeen Mr Houghton Mr Robertshaw Mr Shimmin Mr Cretney Mr Watterson Mr Skelly Mr Gawne AGAINST Mr Hall Mr Karran Mr Cannan Mr Henderson Mrs Beecroft Mrs Cannell Mr Thomas The Speaker In the Council Ayes 8, Noes 1 FOR Mr Corkish Mr Wild Mr Crowe Mr Downie The Lord Bishop Mr Butt Mr Braidwood Mr Coleman AGAINST Mr Turner Chris Thomas MHK had tried for an amendment to have the matter looked at by committee but that was thrown out. The voting was as above (ie those for the amendment were those against the tax):
  5. (Confirmation of vote) TYNWALD COURT, WEDNESDAY, 19th FEBRUARY 2014 ________________________________________________________________________ 6. Sewerage Act 1999 Sewerage Charge Order 2014 approved The Chairman of the Water and Sewerage Authority to move: That the Sewerage Charge Order 2014 be approved . [sD 2014/0040] Hansard (temporary rolling Hansard link only) Starts page 124, vote at page 153 The vote: The usual suspects and Skelly and Quayle got well rewarded. Seriously, what would happen if these people were voted out 2016?
  6. That'll be the day

  7. The bishop has to keep in with the establishment gang. The position of Bishop as a member of the Legislative Council, let alone a voting member, are numbered. The weak and largely irrelevant excuse for there to be a Bishop is because he is a member of Tynwald. Kick him off. Now. Seriously, what would be the consequences? I genuinely ask someone to provide any argument, doesn't even have to be convincing, why the Bishop is still a member of the Legislative Council.
  8. Excellent post. Say £500 fine for allowing dog excrement in a public place. That's 10 people's tax right away. Up our road I reckon 100 people's tax could easily be covered. Enforcing the existing laws would soon put a stop to these dirty, filthy, disgusting, selfish people. But I would gladly pay £50 a year if it meant our streets and pavements were clear of dog shite.
  9. I think it is this one, posted to the Positive Action Group, scroll down a few posts: Facebook Interestingthat someone has said that members of Tynwald read reading through the petition picking out fake names and finding themselves a reason to dismiss the petition. I wonder how many of the 6,000+ names will be voting for them come the general election in 2016?
  10. He'll be well rewarded for his loyalty. Let's see what the ignorant effer[1] has to say to the motion. [1]Not intended as an ignorant insult. The remark is based on personal experience with him as part of his parliamentary business.
  11. Amongst all the forumesque dialogue in this thread, there has been some quality legislation criticism and scrutinising, that would put at least 75% of our paid and pensioned sleepy Legislative Council to utter shame. And I would say it also puts quite a few of our elected members to shame too.
  12. That's a good post Roger. It looks to me that you and quite a few others on this forum (hi slinky, see you lurking there) and other members of the public are interested enough and capable enough to look at what is going on with our society and our parliament. Many of you are able to look through and understand legislation and intelligently question it. Well thought out suggestions also often emerge too. So why the fuck do we pay a bench of (in the main) sleepy fogeys at £1000 a week each to sit on the Legislative Council? Fucking why?
  13. And who were the faceless civil servants hiding behind the dispensable politicians and people's representatives?
  14. That chap from the Treasury who got an MBE? Surely if he was any good at his job he would have noticed there was something mighty fishy going on with what looked like a big opulent fuck off glass fronted opera house being built down at Pulrose. There were endless road closures too over Pulrose Bridge (there should have just been one) - a sure sign that things were wildly adrift. People were too keen making fuck-ups and getting handsomely paid diving into the bottomless pit of cash that the taxpayers would pay for one day. Freedom to Fuck-up, Fleece and then Fuck off (apologies to sensitive ears for the quasi-Tourettes outburst) eta: oh, and Enron had just been all over the World's newspapers. Fuck me there are some fuckwits running this Island. The politicians may well be fuckwits too but it is the civil service that my comment is directed at. They are the really well paid and pensioned parasites of our land. And who pays for their them to live lives of luxury. Many of them certainly haven't earned it.
  15. Indeed. And look what happened to the advocates who advised. Bigger, fatter and catter than ever?
  16. Wow! The last few posts put a clear perspective on all this. Who were the advocates who advised the MEA to go ahead with the loans? Who were the advocates who advised Barclays? Whoever they are, they are bigger than the Isle of Man Government - aye, the donkeys, and the donkeys who advise them. The rich and incompetent donkeys who run our lives. And we are all paying for the lot of them to carry on with their grubby lives.
  17. The Legislative Council are too far out of touch and up their own arses. For this tax/charge to have got this far with so little reaction from most of Tynwald, against such a huge public outcry is an outrage. Where were they when we needed them? Certainly in this matter, they have to date served little or no purpose to the public in the Isle of Man. (Doesn't it just look like two threads could be merged)
  18. Can anyone please tell me what the mighty 'advising, revising, scrutinising' Legislative Council had to say about the sewage charge when it was passed in law last year?
  19. Houghton is not just the messenger though is he. He is the Chairman of the Water Authority. He is also the representative of his constituents. What efforts has he made to oppose this charge? None I would say, despite his unconvincing bleating and messenger stance.
  20. The sensible and obvious thing to do is for anyone against this tax to contact their MHK, which in effect is what the petition is doing. There are now over 6000 names. I was amazed that it reached 2000 and I am sure even the most pompous establishment member of Tynwald would admit to being surprised at the unprecedented reaction. Listen to John 'don't shoot the messenger I am only the chairman' Houghton speaking this morning on Manx Radio Mandate, the reason this charge is being introduced is because Treasury has cut the Water Authority budget. The message is - don't let your MHK or indeed the (unelected) members of the Legislative Council vote this in: Begging Bowl - Houghton.mp3
  21. Mr Houghton sounded very intelligent, knowledgeable and erudite on the radio yesterday, he used the phrase "going forward" a few times. He even coupled it with "at this time". The other chap who was on is little better. I don't mind our politicians being a bit thick, I'm not so bright myself, but when their bit-thickedness is used by the civil servants to trounce all over them, and by definition us too, I get well pissed off.
  22. I hope I'm not sounding pedantic, but actually none of us elected the Government. The Government was chosen by one man and one man only - quasi presidante Allan Bell. And we had nothing to do with electing him as Chief Minister. Which is why these jokers get away with stunts like this. And when even backbenchers comply and then claim they are just the messenger, what fucking use is it having a politician involved with the likes of the Water Authority at all? Democracy? Democracy my arse. I thought Gawne and Cregeen on Mannin Line last week were a joke but these two today really take the biscuit.
  23. Houghton has been spouting "there is no alternative". Is that the best he can do? Roll over and take it. Who is he supposed to be representing here? He is indeed the messenger of the Civil Servants backroom boys who thought up this wheeze. I hope Douglas North find themselves an alternative in 2016.
  24. Did John Houghton not take a bit of a knock too? 2006: Robert William Henderson........1627 John Ramsey Houghton............1615 Michael Coleman........................688 Mark Atherton.............................290 2011 John Ramsey Houghton..........1376 Robert William Henderson......1257 Theo Fleurbaay.........................869 Peter Hill...................................722
  25. John Houghton MHK says this charge may be unwelcome but it is absolutely necessary and insists there is no alternative. He also says that it is "not funny at all" and he "gets no delight in announcing this charge". I hope not John. I certainly see John Houghton in a very different light these days.
