The Isle of Man used to have the birch until the legal industry realised that having such a formidable punishment was acting as a strong deterrent to criminals and thus compromising the legal industry's financial revenue. It was accordingly banned with the contrived excuse of being in breach of the Geneva convention* and crime exploded into popularity again with the legal industry reaping huge financial benefits as a result.
*Geneva convention. A set of legal tools drawn up under the guise of "human rights" to protect the interests of criminals. It originates in Switzerland - the money laundering capital of the world for war-criminals, drug dealers and other large-scale organised crime.
