  1. There are a touch under 300 turbines in Ireland, approx 11,000 in the uk and over 70,000 throughout Europe so the technology is proven. I can see three turbines on the hillside from where I live and they make zero noise and actually look pretty nice. Nobody in the area mentions them or complains about them. Some of the farmers even rent out their land to electrical providers so they can build them. Pretty much every country and continent has them so the Isle of Man is falling behind the rest of the world. Whether that’s on purpose to remain a throwback to the past or just an unwillingness to change I’m not sure.
  2. I believe their solution was that they can offer insurance the equivalent of abta/atol for a few quid but only if you book your holidays through them. Not sure how much commission they will add on for booking the holiday.
  3. I’ve had a look into this as a family member lives in the iom and it might affect them. So far I’ve found out that if you are resident in the iom, jersey or guernsey and you book a holiday through a uk based firm ie. TUI, jet2holidays, thomas cook etc you are not covered by Abta/atol as you are not resident in uk. Apparently eligibility is determined by the customers residency/address you gave whilst booking tickets not the status of the company it’s booked through. So, if you book a package holiday (for example through TUI) and it is cancelled or the hotel or flight provider or airline goes bust you will not be refunded through abta/atol. Also in these circumstances if you are trapped in a foreign company they may not organise your return flights like the rest of the passengers on your defunct flight. interestingly this may also impact travel insurance as payouts to travellers in these circumstances are reliant on the insurance company eventually recouping their costs through abta/atol. As most Manx insurance companies on the island are brokers/intermediaries for uk or non-manx insurance companies rather than actual insurance providers there might be a (slow) trickle down of changes to t&c’s. It’s all a bit vague at the moment but it looks like it could seriously effect iom travellers quite badly. As I said it may effect my family so I’ll keep looking and if I find any more info I will come back to you.
