Miss Take
I'd just like to add that just under a grand sounds like an awful lot of money, even for a ski holiday - is he going for a fortnight?
Tuna Sandwich
I'd just like to add that just under a grand sounds like an awful lot of money, even for a ski holiday - is he going for a fortnight? Probably paying for the teachers who tag along too!!!
girl89
Same/similar price for Ballakermeen too. And yeah, students do have to pay for the teachers
Miss Take
Same/similar price for Ballakermeen too. And yeah, students do have to pay for the teachers that could be a bit of a con, especially if they're going through a regular ski operator, as most of them operate significant group discount deals, often with as much as 1 in 6 places free for a big enough group. However, I don't know the specific details - I'm sure there are reasons for it being this price so I shall now shut up
girl89
Yeah I think they do get discounts, but the school also has to pay for replacement teachers whilst the other ones are away, and that is included in what the students have to pay. Also, with skiing, there is a lot of eqiupment to hire and quite far to travel. My watersports trip to Spain was cheaper as we got a coach most of the way (never again am I going on a coach for nearly 27 hours)

But arn't these trips taken during the holidays (easter)? You can't (or should I say shouldn't) take your children on holiday during term time if you are a parent. Think they have been coming down hard on parents recently for this. I just wonder what 'education' they get on this trip if it is held in term time and how is it fair for the children who can't afford to go to be in school? It does seem expensive for a school trip. Maybe the insurance costs are super high for this type of booking.

They (the resort) insist on the pupil to staff numbers, the government insist on the pupil to staff numbers, Mr and Mrs Johnny insist that there are staff when little Johnny is on the slopes, why should they pay? I think they should get extra pay for doing the trips too - they dont get over time for the weekends and are looking after everyones little brats for 24 hours a day. Add up the costs of insurance, public liability, third party, medical insurance, bed and board, instuction, passes, hire, entertainment, coach travel, boat travel and the associated insurances - then the costs are not that high. They only have to take spending money for fireworks, knives and porn mags to bring home. Each school has to pay for supply teachers to teach the others left - none of it come cheap. Quite a cheap holiday really, paying for staff or not.

I don't understand this - nice little holiday for the well off kids, whilst the not so fortunate have to slog it out at school and eat coal. The school is funded by the Government so we are already paying for supply teachers etc. As for the poor overworked teachers having to look after the kids for 24 hours a day? De Dumms!! . It is a good thing they get 10+ weeks of paid holiday a year isn't it! Absolutely no sympathy
sarahc
Do you want to look after teenagers in holiday mode 24-7? Not me! I think teachers who do it should get paid double!

Sparkly things make me smile
When I was on a ski trip, we had too help pay for teacher costs .i.e there equipment, travel, food, accomodation etc

As has already been said, the trip is during the school holidays, so get off that soap box before it breaks. As Minnie has said the price is just for a week, and I wasn't kicking off too much about that, it was the 'extra' fee for the 'optional' helmet. Each school has to pay for supply teachers to teach the others left - none of it come cheap.During Easter? Really?

No soap box petal, if you read my previous post I was asking the question because someone mentioned supply teachers to cover and I didn't understand why skiing holidays were taken in term time. They are not, so my question no longer stands. Personally I don't give a shit, you pay your grand and hope your kid has a wonderful time.
