They’re both Anglo transliterations of the original. Neither is exactly the phonetic of the original, although in the dialect of the region Sczechuan is possibly nearer but since romanisation (pinyin) in the 1980’s Sichuan is the Chinese official.

But Brits ( and Germans and French ) have always been good about not using original names, Roma, Firenze, Venezia, København, etc

Them fellas is the same with Darby an Andress 🤔

  2. Just had a walk through of the new Tesco on Victoria Road, ex Shoprite, they have one of those automatic water misters to keep the fish fresh. Just before you go on, you hear the sound of distant waves and the smell of the sea.
When you approach the dairy section, you hear cows mooing and catch the scent of freshly mown grass
When you approach the egg shelf, you hear hens cluck and cackle and the air is filled with the pleasing aroma of bacon and eggs frying.
The bread section has the enhanced aroma of fresh baking bread
The Vegetable Department features the smell of fresh buttered turnips.
In future though, I will be buying my Toilet Paper in the COOP . 😬

I get the bags of salad and have noticed that if you don't open them, they'll last pretty far beyond the sell by date.  However open them and they're done within a couple of days.   Only recently discovered they've got 'modified atmosphere' in the bags.  Extra Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide and reduced Oxygen.

A folded piece of kitchen towel placed in the clipped bag and will give a couple more days acceptable freshness.

Which begs the question why? Hardly going to get inundated with passing footfall

My thoughts as well, lots of passing traffic but nowhere handy to stop, cept the pay for carpark, i reckon it will be more a bijou drinkery for the pub crawlers, nice work if you can get it.😋

  5. Firm closing--ish, 35 years in the Peter Luis building, relocating to---maybe internet sales only?

Rising lease costs plus possible plans for fast food type outlet on the ground floor seems to be the decision maker, a shame to see it go 😒

I think so.  The one opposite the Bowler was seasonal, the other one was all year round. May have got the street names wrong, but that is what I remember.  The one opposite the Bowler became a Chinese take away.

The chippy on Melbourne street was operated by my ould Auntie, Molly Bridson, later on it was Henry Cambell's chippy, for the last maybe 20 years it has been a private dwelling. Henry had the chippy in Falcon st prior, this became the City cottage, ending as James Wong.s, both fine takeaways, miss them much.

  7. Bathurst st as a takeaway venue was so busy at one time, between 09.30 and 13.00 the white van fleet [WV] was in, no spare parking for a quarter mile it seemed, then it all changed, the cute chippy didnt take off, neither did the european takeaway, v good one IMHO , the Asian takeaway never seemed to open, Mr B's held out untill RB closed, the WV Workers transfered to Shoprite, Victoria road, Logans on Bucks road and of course Peel road KFC etc grabbed a lot of the business-- a moveable feast indeed

If it was a Muslim Indian restaurant, I don't think they use Beef at all for their personal religious beliefs. Nor alcohol sometimes!

I'm sure really good Prawn Crackers may? have some dried Prawns in them but the ones we get have probably not seen more than a swish of a Prawns tail, or chemical flavouring??? Or maybe Beef!!!

Pork is Haram in Muslim culture, Beef {Dana} is Halal, if correctly blessed.

To be mega-pedantic it's the River Douglas flood plain as the maps show the combined river is called that after the confluence of the Rivers Dhoo and Glass behind the Power Station.  The Glass, as you pointed out before, also has its own floodplain in Port-e-Chee Meadows

Perhaps not for a retail store, especially if measures have been taken to protect services etc.  But it's not good for housing, which is what someone had been suggesting for the area.

There is housing there already, and an apartment complex with below road level parking, a pub, a Railway station and various businesses, all on the level of the Lake road, you build to your enviroment, for that area lifting the levels with infill would work, lest we forget North Quay was not always that level, it was raised to the Quay side walll level.
