There are rules but apparently they can’t even reliably measure sound levels because the bloke at the DOI who knew who to use the equipment has retired. That’s what was said when this topic popped up a while ago.

This whole new debate came about not because of responsible sportscar or motorbike users, but thanks to Ford Fiasco driving boy racers with their shitty cherry bomb exhaust, fitted in the testosterone filled hope of impressing the local female population. Unfortunately the female who heard it was 76 year old Gladys down on south quay who phoned the police, the council and her MHKs.

There is no need for anything new. Just tell the muppets in their shitcans to calm.

    How very dare you!

Neither the Island’s politicians, nor the officers who support them have the competence to be leading the way on something as complex and important as this. If ever there were a case for following another’s example, this is it

Dont get me wrong, I’m all in favour of euthanasia tourism as a niche way of keeping the incinerator running, but “we” shouldn’t be devising the rules.

100%, but not re the incinerator, so 97%.

“Poaching” is a handy virtue-signalling short form, but is it really accurate?   If we have the vacancies and qualified staff from other countries are keen to apply, should we be the ones to say “no, it’s not fair to your home country”?

How to retain homegrown staff is part of a much bigger fundamental question…

What about, say, refugees?  If any are medically qualified,  do we tell them to go back home and not employ them?

    "Leonardo's" is correct. It's the establishment's name.

As it is implying it is the restaurant belonging to Leonardo rather than implying multiple Leonardos, but if it was the restaurant belonging to multiple Leonardos, it would be Leonardos'.  Though I cannot comment how the apostrophe should be placed, if at all, in Italian.

To be pedantic, and I apologise, you and I and the rest of the taxpayers on the island own the Steam Packet. The liabilities and debts bit is not going well, as we are now 300 million into the company, although having paid my June fare that would have helped LOL !

To be pedantic, no we, the taxpayers, do not own the Steam Packet, Treasury does.

Yes, taxpayers' money has been used to fund the purchase and loans.  But, in a way, that is no different to a bank taking deposits and those deposits being used to make loans.  The depositors do not own the loans.   I do get your point,  but the real point is that Treasury should act as a shareholder and lender bearing in mind its obligations to the taxpayer to safeguard public funds.

As for how much the government is into the company, if you are including the Liverpool landing stage, that cost is nothing to do with the Steam Packet.  It is an overall cost of shipping links to the island, and was not asked for by the Steam Packet but user costs are for it to meet.

    That's pedantry!

The claims that this is all a government conspiracy seem to be the typical default online claims.

Quite.  If there was a conspiracy, it would never have gone to trial.

I'd love to see an installation similar to that. Something more akin to our budget though. We'd end up with 1/4" ball bearing stuck on matchsticks.

Quite the reverse, we would end up with something that would block the sun.

Gladys unfortunately the people of today do not have time to cook the more economical cuts and want something that cooks in minutes, although they will sit for hours gazing at a telephone etc. times have changed and not for the better.

That may be true, but a slow cooker is ideal for cooking these cuts and is quite a time saver for the evening meal.  Takes a bit of forethought and planning though!

Ballahig meats at St John's will sort you out with any offal or different cuts, cheeks/shin etc give them a call, they will even deliver to your door.

Thanks.  I have used them, and they are very good on price too.  Just a shame that these cuts are not more widely available.

I did chat to someone on the Manx Meat stall at the food fair last year, or the year before.  They said that there was no demand from butchers, which was a bit of a cop out I thought.  Presumably marketing isn't within their remit.

Sorry for so many questions but you seem to obviously know the courts world. Thanks.

Not really.  The sad thing is that what appears to be the justice machine working, even though we don't like the outcome, it suddenly becomes a conspiracy.  The Deemster did indicate it was a difficult case, but was in the interests of fairness.

Why doesn't everyone just ditch their advocate then during a trial?

The case has not been dismissed, just aborted.  He is still on bail.  So it looks like  there will be a return match, with all the additional cost to him that will involve.

Sorry I dont follow court stuff. Why would this all come about only after the subject had started giving evidence?

Because perhaps that was when he, or his advocate, advised the court that he no longer had representation.

I was not criticising the Deemster's decision.

Scales was on the stand for some period of time. The questions he was asked and the responses he made are not reported. In a case of this significance I would expect there to be a news report.

(And, generally speaking, I have no idea what day of the week it is)

We don't know how long he was on the stand before the court being told he no longer had representation.

  14. Just now, NoTailT said:

But if the defendant (Scales) had started to give his evidence, surely the trial is basically almost over at that point?

Why would it be over?  There have been several days of prosecution evidence, so you could expect more that a couple of hours from the defence then possibly cross examination and so on.

The conspiracy theories are rife, when the truth is that this is probably the result of real justice.  Each side should be given adequate opportunity to put their case, under advice.

I don't get aborting a trial though. Just vacate and continue after a brief break?

But it would not be brief.  How long do you think it would take for a new advocate to go through the evidence, consult, advise and then prepare a defence?

Aborting the case was probably the only option.  The report refers to having considered in Chambers which possibly means the deemster took time out to consider and discuss with the representing counsel.

It is also fair to the jury to release them and to the defence to allow a different advocate to advise on the defence.
