  1. Evidence? Not the cost of transportation of raw materials and finished goods, or the labour involved in every stage of the process?
  2. No, you were complaining that prices haven't come down. On your lemonade question, at what point from the originating of the raw materials to you leaving the store with your bottle do you think labour is not involved?
  3. Of course, Shoprite would have dropped prices. My comments above are about prices in general, not just retail and not specifically Tesco.
  4. Labour is a very large component of the price for many things. Hence the sweatshops of the Far East.
  5. They don’t fall back after an inflationary period, just don't rise so much. Otherwise, it is deflation.

Yes, I hoped HiVibes would read the whole dictionary entry.
  7. And homed any number of refugees.
  8. Don't mess with me, Kopek!
  9. Found safe yesterday, I think.
  10. I do not want to close the thread, and I want to see discussion and new issues raised and debated. You can keep on expressing your opinion, as I will keep expressing mine, but do not accuse me of wanting to close matters (or you) down just because I don't agree with all you say. Discussion is a two-way street.
  11. This has been discussed before. There is no anti-competition law that could have been used to assess whether or not the transaction should proceed. I do not know if there was such legislation, whether it would have prevented the transaction. I do not know, for sure, whether the transaction would have been refused if it took place in the UK. Even if there was the legislation and the transaction was deemed to fall within it and refused, what would happen next? Empty Shoprite stores across the island? Several independents taking on some of the stores? Aldi or Lidl stepping in? The fact is it has happened. No doubt Tesco are monitoring performance of all stores and will probably make adjustments to maximise the performance of each. As we keep on saying, it all has to settle so we know exactly what we have.
  12. Not sure anyone had the power to prevent or allow the acquisition.
  13. Yes, it's OK, but I wouldn't go unless I was also shopping. They do a nice scone and toasted teacake, however.
  14. Is not that the same offence as reported on 12 April?
  15. Thanks Roger, I guessed it was based on the opening of the Casino, but thought it was a bit of a stretch to say it was established then. It was probably a board, which would have gone through several emanations since then. At that time there was only one casino allowed.* What else were they responsible for then? Bookies? I have a very vague recollection of there being one bookmaker back then, with a local name, I think. But there were not very many and there may have been none prior to the mid-1960s. Will have to do some Googling. They do say they were established in 1962 on their website, so there must be some basis to trace their history from then. ETA * The 1990 Casinos Act allowed for a maximum of 2 land based casinos.

If you look down a bit, there will be the etymology. Let us know what that says.
  17. The GSC was established in 1962?
  18. I get the point now, thank you. Is the issue, then, that a full time job should have a higher minimum wage? The reason being that if you are working full time at minimum wage, the number of hours available to you to make up your income is less, so the benefit is less, particularly when you slip into the higher rate of tax?
  19. But I still don't understand the issue. The single person's allowance is £14,500 and the lower rate band is for the first £6,500 above that. So you can earn up to £14,500 tax free, earn £21,000 and pay 10% on £6,500. Earn over £21,000 and you then pay tax at 22% on the amount earned over £21,000, whether that is in one job or two. As I understand it you can ask the Tax Office to split the allowance between the two jobs, but surely you still pay the same amount of tax overall? Or am I missing something?
  20. So, should a second job be tax free or have a second full personal allowance applied to your earnings from it?
  21. Sorry, didn't catch that, what did you say?
