Manx News

I know this question has been asked before but it seems things change.

Myself, I have always relied on Manx Radio News and Mandate along with their website, which still needs a fair bit of tidying up but is adequate enough.

When I look at the Isle of Man Newspapers Website I am amazed at how un-newsworthy it is.

Lots of adverts but no real news as far as I am concerned.

I always buy the Manx Newspapers anyway, but just get the feeling I am reading mainly drivel fed to the paper by Government Departments etc. I also cringe at some of the opinion and gassing placed in the papers by a few of the writers in their various columns.

Isle of Man Newspapers is like a comic and I enjoy looking at the pictures but not in this week's Examiner though, where the new printer seems to have gone doolally. Oh, and the crossword clues are the wrong ones for the grid.

So I am happy that my main source of 'what's going on' is from Manx Radio.

David Callister was getting rather Paxmanesque in this interview with Phil Braidwood:

20060629_News_clip.mp3 and good on him for that. He still didn't get a straight answer from the minister though.

I also enjoy a bit of the gossip that can be gleaned from manxforums.com but of course a lot of it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I did also enjoy manxman.com but see above re salt. There is a need for satire and fun but it seems that that sort of stuff just isn't welcomed by them that controls us.

I couldn't agree more. But like all regional papers, they are finding it tough with the competition from new media, and an ever aging readership - today's generation are completely bemused by a local broadsheet - and who can blame them. IMO, when the economy is doing well, and we have full employment, we tend to take little notice of "the news" unless it affects us directly. Witness cases such as Mount Murray. I think if we were back in the late 80's, when things weren't quite as rosy as now, Allan Bell and Lord Albert whould have been burnt at the stake. Likewise The Neds. There seems to be an attitude of not wanting to rock the boat - or more likely, I'm alright Jack - which the local press appears to endorse.

We have had some excellent journalists on the Island over the years - investigative journalists who could actually write. The current incumbent are merely typists.

On the subject of Manxman - and Albert (God bless him) I don't know if this has been posted elsewhere,

but it is interesting that the attitude the US court has taken is very different from the Manx court's decision

over Roly Drower's assertion that he was a journalist when he was running the Mnaxman site.

Although it's debatable that much of the content was news - I think this might be some sort of vindication,

or cold comfort.

A California appeals court decided against Apple today in the company's bid to force bloggers to turn over sources who leaked information about the Apple product codenamed "Asteroid" way in 2004.

This follows an earlier ruling where the trial judge sided with Apple, after which the EFF intervened and appealed the case.

Apple had argued that the websites in question, PowerPage and Apple Insider, were not entitled to the same rights as traditional journalists - and even if they were, they still didn't have the right to protect sources who leaked trade secrets.

But the appeals court roundly rejected both notions as contrary to California's reporter's shield law and the state Constitution, effectively stating that it wasn't Apple's place to decide what constitutes "legitimate journalism," and that Apple could have investigated the leak of trade secrets themselves without drawing the websites into the mix.

The case also has signficant implications for ISPs, who now know that they don't have to reveal the contents of private emails if they receive a civil subpeona. Apple apparently hasn't offered any comment on the decision yet.

The local news websites would be a lot better if they provided links to similar pages or relevent sources.

They 'inform' us that something has happened or is happening, but expect us to remember parts 1, 2 and 3 of the story that they told us six months ago instead of a simple "Click here" that links to historical reports.

What about a local tabloid ?! Full of gossip, lies and pictures - if you took away the births, deaths, obituaries, imprisonment and house purchases from the current offerings nobody would bother.

Bottom line is that people are nosey (not saying that's good or bad) so if you give 'em exageratted stories, tons of pictures and the odd scandal - BOSH, job done ! :-)

Could even venture to page 3 local girls and/or page 7 local lads - that would sell, why ? ..... because ..... you guessed it ...... people are nosey ! :o
