The DHSS has released a breakdown of its overspend, showing exactly where the financial holes are which need plugging.

Three-and-a-half million pounds is required to meet obligations derived from a three per cent pay award to NHS and Whitley Council workers.

An extra £2 million must be found for the next financial year to meet the ever-rising costs of Manx patients going to the UK for elective treatment.

The remaining £3 million is split equally three ways to cover the cost of the swine flu response, an increase in benefits claims and a shortfall in National Insurance receipts.

the pay award for whitley workers last year was 1.5 percent not 3 per cent it was the final year of a 3 year deal linked to the rate of inflation so you would think government would of had budgeted for it seen has they had known about it for 3 years, Teare is only using the workers as scape goats for his mismanagement. What Teare fails to tell everyone is the real reason for the deficit is the £6.5 million some say it was closer to £8 million back pay of 2 years paid last summer to all nursing/clinical staff that were on the agenda for change/pay modernisation. No one begrudges the nurses or health care assistants but clinical managers thats a different story!! some of these clinical managers have not done any hands on nursiing for several years yet they picked up £40,000 plus in back pay due to the agenda of change, where as the nursing staff picked of £1000-£3000 back pay.one clinical manager bragged he could buy a 2nd hand porsche from his back pay! 6 posts were created for the agenda of change for 18 months for an exericise that was orignally planned to be for 6 months and once the agenda for change was over more posts were created for some of them... figures dont add up because government so called leaders are witholding the truth about how the taxpayers money is been spent....

Geez! A really bright idea- cut health services yet continue to hand out benefits to those who sit around on their arses. I think we all sit around on our arses if thats the case. Seems to be the only way of not being penalised

not bad 18% pay rise to sponge off the taxpayer! where in gods name do they come up with these ideas??? pay more tax & national insurance so those on benefits can enjoy the good life, where hav we workers gone wrong??

I once bought as second hand Porsche for £1250 and sold it for £600.

Not much backpay is it?

lol thats definately a cheap porsche Pat! his back pay was 40 times what you paid for yours and 30 times it for his secondhand porsche so he had a very healthy pay rise indeed.

Was it a 924 Pat?

You know it, the model with the van engine in, 'sunbleached red' in colour, bloody good engine though and a bargain. I couldn't reach the pedals properly that's why I sold it.

Press Release 21 February 2010

Liberal Vannin negotiates an even better deal for Medical Insurance

Liberal Vannin is saddened that, despite the unanimous vote in favour of Party Leader, Peter Karran’s Private Members Bill to enable government to charge a levy on travel, and thereby fund medical insurance cover for all, there have been no constructive meetings to progress the issue.

The brokers have always stated that, as far as the administration of the policy was concerned, their presentation was only a suggested way forward and that they were more than happy to work with Government regarding the details of implementation. Liberal Vannin has continued the dialogue with the brokers and has now negotiated an even better deal. For the same cost the insurers have agreed to cover all Manx residents when visiting the UK regardless of whether they left the Island via the ferry or airlines or not. This means that the policy will give global cover via a Master Policy covering all Manx residents and will give assurance to those in industries such as fishing that could otherwise have been adversely affected.

The insurers have also agreed that they will deal with claims directly. They have suggested a proof of residence card be issued to all residents which would have, on the reverse, a dedicated telephone number for hospitals to call when a Manx resident was admitted.

This means that Government only have to:

• Pay the initial premium deposit of £250,000

• Issue the proof of residence cards

Liberal Vannin hopes that Government will now give this proposal their proper support rather than just the lip service it has received to date.
