December 7Th - Pan-European Bank Mutiny Day

After German blog "All is Smoke and Mirrors" floated an idea of an organized bank run (something attempted previously in the US without much success) in France in response to French austerity protests (which have resulted in no gains), the effort has since expanded to a pan-European organized bank run day on December 7, 2010, and has metastasized to Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Greece. We are confident that very soon the rest of Europe, which is currently gripped in a climate of extremely unpopular austerity, will join in this symbolic protest against banking, which unlike the US, may just succeed, considering the European banking system is in total shambles, and in far worse shape than its American counterpart.

Should be interesting, sure the Manx banks will be fine though!

Yeah, that'd be a brilliant idea - lets all withdraw our money at the same time and force some banks back to the brink of bankruptcy, then sit back and watch the governments of Europe bail them all out. All the money they are saving by cutting services and public sector staff would be lost in an instant propping up the banking system, triggering another round of cost-cutting.

Fucking halfwits.

as above ^^^^^.

even better that its doing the rounds on the web so the banks have plenty of time to stock up on cash,

or what will prob happin is they will just shut the banks and stop letting the money go out, saying they need so long to sort the funds out.

Whats even better is, what are these plonkers going to do with the cash they remove, while id say most laymen wont have a great deal in the bank to take in the first place,

would you be happy to have 2-3k of cash sat in your house,

Does not take organized crime a lot to work out whos who at the bank and then go on the rob that night of peoples homes who have just taken all there cash out.

I don't agree with the idea of everyone pulling their money out, but why are they doing it in the first place?

Is it because the banks are willingly giving themselves a huge pat on the back with massive shareholders handouts or similarly, giving huge rewards to a selected few?

Prefer the suggestion of putting it in an ethical bank (though I did withdraw a 5 figure sum and stick it under the proverbial mattress around this time last year!.

It is unlikely they will get bailed out for THIS reason and unlikely they will be bailed out again within such a short period of time.

That MIGHT just be the case, but it isn't a good reason to argue that this action shouldn't take place. Sounds like you're making poor excuses.

Alternatives to what? Rightly or wrongly, the European economy, as well as many others, is underpinned by the banking system, for all its faults. The reason governments rushed to shore up failing banks is that the economy cannot afford for them to go to the wall.

We are seeing a similar situation with Ireland. The UK doesn't have any money, but is going to get some to bail out Eire because the UK economy simply cannot afford for it to go bust.

Most European economies simply cannot afford for major banks to go bust - simple as that. They may not have any money themselves, but they will find it to stop major financial institutions going under.

Having a run on the banks will achieve nothing, either because, in typical greasy hippy, dog-on-a-string, "my real name's Tarquin, but I go by Angst the Anarchist" way, it'll be throghouly disaorganised and slightly embarrassing, or it will work and some banks will be force to the edge again.

I'm not defending the current banking system or the reliance most economies have on it, just pointing out that some soap dodgers withdrawing the money Daddy gave them to pursue their career as an 'artist', if successful, will only serve to see government's handing yet more money to the banks and everyone else having to suffer the cuts.

Obviously, Tarquin won't be affected because Daddy keeps all his money offshore.

Or then again just leave it in a bank with 100% guarantee :(

Very hostile! Hippy, dog-on-a-string, Angst the Anarchist, "middle-class youngster", soap dodgers, and budding artists. Do you actually know what you're talking about? You seem to be just clutching at a loads of terms for different groups of people to try and whitewash those who are taking this action as being selfish. A strange outlook in view of the circumstances surrounding such a proposed campaign.

And again, if this ever did work then I think it unlikely that the government would bail the banks out again. The government is not going to throw money at something that cannot be sustained. Isn't that the point, to make these banks unsustainable?
