The Sick Moon
Be careful out there guys, it's mayhem. Especially if you work in a dole office. Some of those doleys are proper mentals. Maybe they should close down ALL dole offices. You know, just to be on the safe side. Crazy....... " A social security office has closed permanently following a review of staff safety. A total of 80 Job Seekers’ Allowance claimants who use the Cronk y Reayt complex in Port Erin will now have to travel into Douglas to sign on at Markwell House once a fortnight. The closure of the office follows an incident at the social security office in Ramsey on July 8 when a lone female member of staff was threatened. A 23-year-old from Ramsey has been remanded in custody to await sentencing, having pleaded guilty to a charge of provoking behaviour. The court heard that the member of staff had been left with real concern over her safety. There have been no such incidents at the Port Erin office but social security bosses believe the building does not provide the protection needed for staff should they be similarly threatened. ‘The building is not fit for purpose, There is an issue of security with the lone member of staff who works there,’ said Ross Stephens, director of social security. He said the JSA claimants were expected to travel to the Job Centre in Douglas regularly and so there would be no additional expense to sign on at the same time. ‘We expect job seekers to take reasonable steps to look for work. We would expect them not just to be sitting at home but to be in the Job Centre at least once a week. We will take into consideration the time it takes to travel into Douglas.’ Mr Stephens pointed out that there was no social security office in the west of the island and so JSA claimants from Peel already travel to Douglas to sign on, while those in Kirk Michael sign on in Ramsey. He said that if alternative suitable accommodation becomes available a move back to the south of the island would be considered. Mr Stephens said the office in Ramsey was not under threat and there would be no job losses as a result of the closure of the Port Erin office. WTF
reasonable?? it could look like an excuse to save money to some, maybe the staff should be six foot steroid junkies with tattoos instead of potentially vulnerable people?
notwell
logical step. If they can't be arsed to go to Douglas once a fortnight to collect then they probably can't be arsed to work either. It should save some money too eventually on the premises at least and you can get more work out of the staff member too (assuming they haven't disappeared into early retirement with a fat wedge). player
So how much is the return fare to Douglas. I expect this may be a consideration unless of course the dept have already covered this.
Rhumsaa
£5.70 return bus fare I think ETA from Ramsey so PE/PSM may be cheaper Also cheaper options are available using the Go cards etc
Tarne
Reasonable step indeed. Most jobs are in Douglas, so they could combine the dole trip with a couple of interviews.
x-in-man
What's the bus fare fare to do with it? Most will just use their work vans or get a cab.
Lxxx
Can they claim back the bus fare to get to the dole office/interviews? I'm sure they can.

It it was me - any one kicking off and threatening violence in the dole office would have their benefits cut for at least 6 weeks and they'd be told that if they do it again benefits will be cut permanently. The staff don't need to be exposed to angry violent scum when they are only doing their job. It's stupid shutting the office down though as now everyone else will have to get the bus into Douglas at their cost leaving them with even less money through no fault of their own.
