Sharing The Load.

Each of us need support as we go through life's journey. For a Christian this support comes through faith in the Lord Jesus. This is a story which will resonate with some. Others will be able to relate to it in one way or another because of a friend or a neighbour or a mother and father...   One Night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand;

Jesus Is Betrayed.

All Saints EP 25th March 2007 Luke 22,1-13 In the name of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.   Are you ever ashamed to be part of the human race? Today, is the 200th anniversary of the day the UK Parliament abolished the trafficking of slaves. A terrible indictment of man's inhmanity to his fellow man. When you watch TV or read a newspaper, you learn about awful things happening to your fellow men and women. The other day the cricket coach being strangled by apparently

Student Volunteers For Kenya.

Kenya Experience 2007 a Freedom to Flourish project Info Sheet March 2007   Introduction A visit to a developing country can have a powerful and positive effect on a young person’s motivation, worldview and career. These days many opportunities exist to visit developing countries, but most often these are taken up by university students and graduates. So this trip is especially for Island young people who left school at 16, who may otherwise be unlikely to enjoy such an opportunity. By sp

Grace For A Meal

"Give bread to the poor and may we who have bread hunger and thirst for Thee."     This is a simple prayer—halting the mind and touching the spirit—that reveals the truth about ourselves and about God, about why we hunger and who fills us. It changes our relationship to the food in front of us, moves our attention from our lacks to our abundances—in other words, makes us grateful—and puts us in mind of the only One to whom we owe thanks for our daily bread.

Ash Wednesday Homily

ASH WEDNESDAY   HOMILY OF JOHN PAUL II   Wednesday, 8 March 2000     1. "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your holy Spirit from me" (Ps 51: 10-11).   Today, Ash Wednesday, this is how the Psalmist, King David, prays: a great and powerful king in Israel, but at the same time frail and sinful. At the beginning of these 40 days of preparation for Easter, the Church puts his words on the lips o

The End Of Slavery.

Bury Me in a Free Land   Make me a grave where'er you will, In a lowly plain, or a lofty hill; Make it among earth's humblest graves, But not in a land where men are slaves.   I could not rest if around my grave I heard the steps of a trembling slave; His shadow above my silent tomb Would make it a place of fearful gloom.   I could not rest if I heard the tread Of a coffle gang to the shambles led, And the mother's shriek of wild despair Rise like a curse on the trembling air.

A Hymn On Work

A hymn on work   Take my hands and make them as your own, And use them for your kingdom here on earth. Consecrate them to your care, Anoint them for your service where You may need your Gospel to be sown. Take my hands, they speak now for my heart, And by their actions they will show their love. Guard them on their daily course, Be their strength and guiding force To ever serve the Trinity above. Take my hands, I give them to you, Lord. Prepare them for the service of your name. Op

Climate Change Steering Group

Here are some brief notes I made at the Acclimatise Steering Group meeting held last week:   Notes on Climate Change Steering Group Report   1. Adaptation Policy Fundamentals and Executive Summary.   In 2-3 weeks time a report will go to Government to enable a Tynwald debate for April/May. A number one priority is the security of energy supplies - gas, oil. Installation of solar panels would be of assistance with this. The Governments energy policy should bring NGO’s on-board.   There

Pray For A Restful Night.

That you will give us a quiet night and a perfect end: we pray to you, O Lord.   That you will have mercy upon us and grant us your salvation: we pray to you, O Lord.   That you will keep us this night without sin: we pray to you, O Lord.   That you will guard us and give us your blessing: we pray to you, O Lord.   That you will bring us with [N and] all your saints to glory everlasting: we pray to you, O Lord.   Let us commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy

Intercession Prayers

Let us pray.   God the Father reveals that Christ, His Divine Son, is to be our Saviour. Confident in his great love for us, we voice our needs and the needs of the World. Lord hear us, Lord graciously hear us.   We pray for the Church, and for all Bishops, especially Graeme, our Bishop, and all priests and deacons who bring the light of the Gospel to those in darkness. May we use the gifts given us by the one Spirit in the service of the one Lord. Lord hear us, Lord graciously hear us

What Not To Wear In Church.

What not to wear in church A pig farmer decided one morning to attend a church in town. He went into town in his work clothes smelling remarkably like his pig pen.   The churchgoers were outraged at the smell. The Vicar said to the farmer: "The next time you come here, ask the Lord what you should wear." The farmer agreed.   The following Sunday the farmer returned to the same church ...in his work clothes. The Vicar asked: "What did the Lord say?" The farmer replied, "The Lord said he ha

Travelwatch Update

- THE MANX PASSENGER WATCHDOG -     Information Bulletin 1 – January 16th 2007   A public meeting took place on Monday 15th January 2007 at the Empress Hotel in Douglas to consider the possible formation of an independent Manx Passenger Watchdog. Around 70 people attended and at the end of the meeting there was overwhelming support for setting up TravelWatch Isle of Man.   Some 15 people volunteered to be actively involved in the work of setting up the new Watchdog. Travel Watch Iom

I attended this evening’s meeting arranged by the PAG. The aim was to initiate setting up a Manx Passengers’ Watchdog. Brendan O’Friel, outgoing Chairman of the North West Public Transport Users Forum addressed the meeting and answered questions. He is an ex- Prison Governor and thought his theme may be “from jail to rail!”   He posed the question why do we need a passenger watchdog? His answer revolved around the various problems that passengers often experience - lack of appropriate in

The Boy Who Listened To God.

Epiphany 2 1 Samuel 3,1-20   In the name of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen   We live in a world where we can be contacted at anytime, anywhere. I do not know what percentage of the population have a mobile phone but certainly, amongst the younger generation it must be quite high. Probably some of you will have one with you right now, switched off or on silent, I hope. Naturally, we want to be reached, as it may be very important. We do not want to miss that call.

Monks

monks   --------------------------------------------------------------------------------   A man is driving down the road and his car breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, "My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?"   The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears a strange sound. A sound unlike anything he's ever heard before. The Sirens that nearly seduced Odysseu

Christmas Message

What is your vision, your dream for the future? How do we build a sustainable world appropriate to our needs without plundering the world’s natural resources and which has due regard for the human spirit?   For years, I have campaigned on issues - economic, social and environmental. Rarely do I meet anyone who is able to articulate a vision for the future, which is wholly generous. The vision is usually one of restriction in which joy is way down the priority scale. Today we celebrate t

Newsnight Joke

A seasonal joke from Gavin Esler at Newsnight:   Last Christmas I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in the overall performance, particularly in the Flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.   In addition, Husband 1.0 un-installed many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5 and then installed undesirable programs such as: Football 5.0, Rugby 4.3 and Cricket 3.0.   Conversa

Carol For Christmas

Christmas Hymn to be sung to the tune of “The Ash Grove”   When Joseph and Mary so wearily wended Their way from their cottage in Nazareth’s street, Then slept with the oxen in Bethlehem’s stable, And laid in a manger their Baby so sweet, Enduring discomfort and squalor and hardship, Compelled by a merciless tyrant’s decree, Few were there on earth who in such tribulation God’s greatness and goodness and glory could see.     God’s glory we see in the sun, moon and planets, In ri

What is your understanding of the term "sustainability"?   2 According to some legal firms there is a real possibility of negligence being proved because of lack of action on CLIMATE CHANGE. THE MANX CHURCH   CHARLES FLYNN, READER, SODOR & MAN – Church of England Central Readers Council Executive Member     Ellan Vannin (Isle of Man) Isle of Man residents are accustomed to being asked about Manx cats, kippers, the T.T. races and Tynwald, the oldest continuous parliament in the world. Sermon 2 Kings 22

All Saints EP EP/CF 2 Kings 22 In the name of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. This evening we are going back to the days of King Josiah - some 600 years BC. Three hundred years earlier King David’s kingdom had been split into two. Israel with 10 of the 12 original tribes had been captured by Assyria and so formed the Northern kingdom. The two remaining tribes constituted the Southern kingdom of Judah. Judah had been lucky, as they had just escaped the fate of Isra

Sermon Revelation 3, 7-end

All Saints EP Revelation 3, 7-end EP/CF 26.11.06 In the name of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. This evening we go to the last Book of the Bible to a book, which many of you are too scared to read. Hidden in the opening chapters is a story of seven very different churches. By studying them, we can learn much about our church, ourselves and others in our church. They are representative of all churches. The book of Revelation was written as a letter and it was intended to
