  2. A last one before I shoot orft on me travels, Fond memories of this Strand St favorite, The Globe, now the Post office I think. The New Strand alongside, often confused with the Old Strand, known also as "The Bullring" and "The Jamaica Inn" a black eye pub in my remembrance.
  3. The Mahogony bar [ Clarendon] is distant on the right, the King Orry pub an the laft.
  4. For the old pub wallahs,The back bar of the Claree, now the Barbary Coast, it was in New Bond st, a separate premises to the Claree at one time with the marvelous name of "The Mahogany Bar", try saying that when you are bladdered!. Poignant for me as it was where I had my first drink in a Pub [alcoholic that is] I was 15 and it was a Green Worthington over bitter.
  5. I have read that, due to the upheaval of the first world war, the sealions were released to sea but the "Arctic bears" were shot.
  6. Tis up the other end, about 50m from the Barbary coast eatery, it would be the roadway past the car park now
  7. The smaller image was Jackie Fayles yard, on the site of one of three tanneries in the area, fed from the hides from [cattle] Market street. The arched entrance leads to Well rd Hill.
  8. ..it was a shared shop, newsagent front, barbers rear so, as the area served sailors and passengers, postcards seem likely.--- A fuller shot of the area.
  9. I heard it was when he lost his son James in 1916, deja vu like, he died in, what is now Iraq fighting "The Turk", buried in Basra.
  10. Anything in partic that you like? I have a large portfoilio, or so the ladies tell me [well one did] This shot is my Great Grandfathers Barber shop on North Quay, Douglas, next to the Coffee Palace.
  11. Before I head to kip, the Catholic Chapel is centre, the end of Athol St but the new St Marys is seen above, The Keys are visible upper right but the Legislative Building yet to be built.
  12. Quite an interesting area, the coffee shop on the corner was the position of the first Catholic Church in Douglas, got a fotee of that somewhere, ok if I post it ?
  13. I think this is the original frontage after conversion to two units.
  14. Me leaving the Star site, the two tier nature is exposed, there was a dray chute from Prospect Hill all the way to the Nelson st pub. The hotel was long gone in my time.
  15. Attorney General Retires On Grounds Of Ill Health, Translation, We made a complete horses arse of the affair and to save face we pay SH off with a handsome lump of taxpayers funds, include a non disclosure clause, then use the tried and tested, "Due to ill health" as the reason. Nothing new, been done so often, we can get away with this wheeze loads of times, no one will notice the deceit and if they do, who cares? Good luck to SH, i wish him well.

    Funny Jokes

Police were called to Glasgow central station after reports of approximately 200 people being stuck to the ceiling and walls They believe someone detonated the first 'no more nails' bomb. Was walking by the fridge earlier when I thought I heard a Bee Gees song coming from it. Turns out it was just the chives talkin'. A little boy is standing in Shoprite Ramsey crying his eyes out & the security guard walks over to him... "What's wrong soul ?" - "I can't find my mummy" "No problem, we'll find her. Now, what 's mummy like?" "Big cocks and Bacardi breezers"
  17. Dont it always seem to go the way of the red herring, the actions cant easily be justified so shift the topic to the support of our troops then any dissent is seen as a betrayal of "our boys". As in this thread, no criticism has been made of our troops yet we descend to the red herring. Our present Govt is pumping it for all their worth to cover their asses. Using them in this way, as a mask to cover failure, is imho the ultimate betrayal.
  18. I dearly hope we have the strength to admit our failings and get our guys out of there, we were only ever a sop for Dudbya, much it botheres him now on the golf course, and Tony? to busy lining his pockets and pretending to have influence in the middle east, they are now gone---time we were as well.
  19. We as a country had no problem backing and arming the Taleban, except when they allowed training camps for Bin Laden to operate. So we went to eradicate the Taleban and Bin Laden, seem we have failed in these aims. We promised to bring freedom and democracy to the Afghans, failed again. Karazai will go the same way as Nadji Bullah Like Iraq, we will scuttle away leaving the country to the warlord/ militias and claim a spin victory and mourn our wasted dead.
  20. Our Tone was quite adamant after our home grown attrocities, he asured us thet they were in no way linked to the Iraq or Afghanistan invasions. Anyone hear bringing democracy or rights for Afghan women any more?
  21. I seem to remember reports prior to the invasion that the Taliban had effectivly and brutally halted opium production. After the invasion, our allies--those nice warlords who disliked the taliban, went straight back into opium and it boomed. Spin wallahs step in and its all the fault of the taliban---voila! Although I am still confused how you can be an insurgent in your own country. They mean those other insurgents and foreign fighters, Western troops are neither [ look for the spin Wallah}
  22. 6 months later i was on Claymore Alpha berthed on Tharos and can fully appreciate the sentiments expressed. Terrrilble times indeed!
  23. The Star was a hard Man U pub at one time, they banned Sunday papers if Man U had lost, We noted that Man U when in the 2nd division had a leading goalscorer who was their own goalkeeper [A Stepney] so we thought it right and proper that we should point this out to the Star regulars! As the man said,"they dont like it up em" Yes there are scars, but it was worth it! Interesting point, the pub was an annexe to the Star Hotel on Prospect Hill and they were linked internally.
  24. there was a similar set up thru a shop on Prospect Hill "horroks?" It was demolished for Victory house and a new right of way established to the side, the original , i think, linked right to Drumgold street and then Callows Slip [ Regent Street} We were always Falcon drinkers, the Tartan bar was the best around [circa 1970] The dogs i never liked, i was banned by Mrs Mc Aleer on my first visit! Used to have a drink with Max Glanz in the snug in later years, i was esentially his office then.
