  1. Presumably half of Cumbrian roads are closed for the same conditions, and all of the roads in the Highlands will be shut. It's ridiculous how often they close it these days.
  2. The Stena high speed cats (yoyager, discovery and explorer) used to allow 30 min turnround in port. But they used to unload / load in 20 mins, so they would depart 5 mins earlier and calculate speed to arrive 5 mins late. The fuel saving was huge, but they were running with 4 jet engines on each. The principle still applies to smaller vessels with ordinary diesels.
  3. in Jeddah, local companies sponsored the roundabout construction - there were Dakota aircraft, fishing dhows, cars half buried into a concrete block with the external half displaying tail lights, models of the planets etc. All very entertaining, although I have just remembered there are no local companies in Port Erin. Shame .... roundabout tourism could have been the future ....
  4. My shop. I had surmised that from previous threads, but I wasn't thinking of saying hello in every shop in Ramsey ........ I'll wait until the rugby is on and walk down the street till I find one with a 'back in 15 mins' sign on the door
  5. Irish Sea forecast: Shipping Forecast - Issued: 1030 UTC Wed 13 Nov Wind: Southwest veering northwest 6 to gale 8, perhaps severe gale 9 later. Sea State: Moderate or rough. Weather: Rain then showers. Visibility: Good, occasionally poor.
  6. As Roger says, it is the speed with which the fire spreads that makes it so bad - from being a small fire on one corner, to having the whole building engulfed is a very short time span.
  7. I sympathise with the idea of a memorial garden across the whole plot, but I don't really think it is practical - who would visit it? There is a small garden down the road, and something should be put on the actual site, but not the whole site. Maybe, some sort of water feature as a memorial - a proper one, not a two bit job. I just don't think many people would use the space - there is Port Jack, Onchan Park, Summerhill all nearby. I think something for the community that will see use, but I honestly don't know what.
  8. I use the A46 round Lincoln occasionally, and it has had best part of 2 years worth of roadworks completed (July 2013) ... here are some of the local users comments: 'You're telling me it wasn't quick. 18 months for less than a mile of road and 4 months (ish) overdue. Private sector would have been quicker. And cheaper maybe? And there is still a single carriageway at either end. So the motorist can rush from one single slow road to another. Daft. How is that going to reduce journey times?' 'The driver in the video just needs to learn how to use roundabouts now!' 'Ace so now we've got a short pointless expensive stretch of dual carriageway between two single carriageways - so not helping the daily commute of anyone at all.' 'Completely agree with peters comment what was the point really?' It would appear that roadworks on the island are no different to the UK, and most of the local population can figure out a much better, quicker, cheaper way of doing it ... now where are those 3000 navvies we hired?
  9. I can't believe how het up people are getting over this - it's not like we have 3 hours of tailbacks to negotiate - leave a little earlier and allow a bit more time. Or leave a little later, traie da looar an all that? And as for all the 'if this was the UK, it would be done so much faster / better, more efficently etc' - I don't think that is true. I see works on major roads in the UK scheduled for 2 years duration where they are trying to keep traffic flowing at the same time. And, as the saying goes, if it is so much better in the UK, there is (usually) a boat in the morning .. I have to say, I do my utmost to avoid Douglas now, mostly because of all the ignorant turkeys desperately trying to get to their destination as quickly as possible - manners, generally, seem to have gone out of the window. It irks me that the common courtesies that used to exist, are disapearing rapidly, overrun by the selfish attitude of a growing majority of drivers.
  10. JW, what are the likely consequences of being caught strolling across private farm land (heather moor) to look at an old tholtan, for example, assuming you are not causing any damage? And assuming the land owner wants to do more than give you an ear bashing.
  11. I've previously bought glazing units only from manx glass and glazing at Snugborough. Just give them the sizes, including glass and void thickness. Always been good.
  12. Great post, looks so small! It does, but don't forget the imitation that is there now was made quite a bit wider with extra panelling at each side.
  13. That can't be correct - it's far too easy!! Many thanks And do you remember travelling on this ? Oooh, it works! Looks so much neater than a whole URL!
  14. Gellings foundry used to be a great shop - at least, the car parts section was! The Queen Victoria statue was kept and installed in a similar place on the MT replacement building. Looking through the previous posts in here, I guess a lot of people remembered http://www.flickr.co...ool-1629811@N23 Edited link. BTW, how do you change the link to display different text eg 'this' rather than the full link address?
  15. Strange, is it not, that half of this thread is taken up by debating the correct plural for roof, rather than answering the intent of the question? If only radfahrer had asked 'Can anyone recommend a good firm to remove moss from a roof', things could have been much more simple! Personally, I'm in the 'roofs' corner.
