  1. I personally would call it bad news to see the islands main bakery fall, as apart from the loss of jobs, we're even more dependant on our neighbours across and we may as well call it the mainland as they'd be supplying nearly everything to us. I never realised that the plant doesn't make their own yeast though and I'd presume that they've looked at this already with the likely reason it wasn't cost effective. I would like to know though and if nothings forthcoming, can some MHK ask the question in the appropriate department please? As said before, if the boat doesn't come in, how long would it take for people to say that we should have our own bakery?
  2. Hi Hilary

I see you've just signed up and hope you'll take a little advice before you plunge straight in and that's to read some of the archived info first as this can inform you of previous replies and you're able to see what interests or annoys people.

The archived or search section is just above the terms and conditions on the upper right of the home page in the wh...

  3. Hi T, Would love to know what weight and offers they've made. I presume you've seen websites similar to this one.
  4. Just passing through to say Hi.

  5. Ask the Liverpudlians, they apparently like it over here! Personally, if thats the case, either make the UK pay for them to be housed over here, or kick them out for life.
  6. Oh so they are not better workers than the Manx men? Or are they really monkeys? Maybe it just comes down to cheap labour?
  7. Sorry Chinanhand but despite having been in the Met I don't think I'll keep up with your insistence that you have to state your profession on here - it's a bit of a drag...[/font] I think people have really missed the point I was making - I think it is absolutely fine for a policeman to post privately and anonymously on the forum - though I'd definitely advise them to be extremely careful if they post about their work as it risks being prejudicial. I am pretty certain no matter what your position in the MET PK you are not posting on here as a policeman. All I am saying is that it probably does make sense to create a log-in along the lines of "IOM Police" which can then post police press releases as PC Venables did, basic advice on policing matters etc. That log in could be used by any of the various policemen who already post on here, allowing them to not get personally involved and would be the equivilent of the MF beat bobby. It would be more immediate and as its a generic log-in not as likely to generate controversy for the individual policeman. I've said it would have to be managed carefully, but I think it would work better than the current system where policemen are posting but where it isn't clear in what capacity - privately or as a community service. I think the community service part is a good thing and would like to see it happen on the forums, that visibility is what I was commenting on when I suggested PC Venables create a sig. I wasn't demanding all policemen identify themselves whenever they post, only when they post as policemen! Fair point and concur with that. I can add that Ramsey Police have a Facebook site and interacts with the public under the heading; Isle of Man Constabulary Northern Neighbourhood Policing Team There is no mistaking who's who, but I would say that whilst acting under the role as a PC, they need to be careful with the confidentiality part of things and also to watch their P's & Q's
  8. I have to disagree with you on this one China, as that implies to me that everybody should put their profession's on view, regardless if you were a Policeman or not. The way I saw it, was that the article about Mr Baines was a factual media release report and could easily have been put on there by persons who have an interest in his case. Mr Venables did just that and I noticed that he didn't add an emoticon or any other personal fact to the statement issued. I personally have no problem as to whether the person I'm responding to is a Policeman, Dentist, Plumber, MHK or someone who is unemployed, as to me, they're all entitled to have their say and opinion and as long as it doesn't affect the conditions wrote on here, then I'm all for equality.
  9. Just passing through and saying Hi :)

  12. Never been to the Bay Hotel Gladys, but might make an effort now you've suggested it. Ok, been today. Sunday 21st September Lovely view on outside, needs doing up inside. Tables and chairs and decor needs some investment. Meal ordered, 1x Roast beef Sunday lunch and a childs Roast beef portion. Cost £7.55 large, childs £3.80 total £11.35 took half an hour for meal. Note: It was a busy period and I heard that there was a group of 15 arrived before us in other room. The meal consisted of: Large portions of beef and had broccoli, carrots, small boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, large yorkshire pudding and a lovely gravy. The veg had a nice buttery type of taste (There didn't appear much difference between the large and small portions, although they were on different shaped plates) I would suggest that they number the tables to assist the waitress and update the interior. It did look busy, but half an hour was pushing it, although the two staff worked very hard for their money today. I thought that the meal tasted ok and gave it my personal guide as a 7/10 for food quality.
  13. I dont even need to watch it.....................BRING ON THE TRUMPETS!!!!!!!!! The action sequence was uncanny
  14. The Isle of Man Family History Society was formed in January 1979 to encourage the study of genealogy and family history, particularly within the Isle of Man.

We hold most of our monthly meetings on the 3rd Friday of each month at the Union Mills Methodist Church Hall, where there is ample car parking, commencing at 7:30 PM

  15. Jaks; Douglas Prom I had a Sunday roast with my partner and found the meal fairly good, well displayed and with a variety of veg. Roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, decent portion of meat, peas in pods, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, Yorkshire pudding and a ball of sage and onion stuffing. The gravy could have been more tastier, but that said, I found the meal filling and reasonably tasteful. Prices for a roast beef dinner was £7.95 and I had the smaller version of Roast lamb for £5.95. I'm not sure what the difference was between the two, apart from an obvious Yorkshire pudding and a different shaped plate, but it certainly beats the preparing of the meal, cooking, and the washing and drying up afterwards. The service was quick and impressive and credit should be given to the young waitress with her friendly approach and we had the meal on the table within 10 minutes of our arrival. The drinks are I suppose what you expect. I had a coke at £1.10 and my partner had a shandy (driving) at £3.00. All in all, a decent meal and would rate it about 7/10
  16. Just barging about It might not be on motion video, but it's worth watching anyway

  23. My comments are similar to 'wideload's' Does anyone have any statistics on how many homeless people there is in the Isle of Man? Also, how many of those are alcoholics and drug addicts etc? Maybe if the public (includes me) could see the extent of the problem, it would go some way for us to understand the bigger picture instead of letting us shrug our shoulders and carry on, as if nothing matters or doesn't concern us. I was unimpressed as to the picture showing bottles and rubbish around the place, will this happen in the new place and what controls will be in place? I think the idea is good initially but I'm a little concerned with regards the alcoholics having so much money to spend on drink as like druggies/drugs and wondered if the money/benefits etc, should be given directly towards the Center instead, or that coupons be given for clothing etc, so that they haven't got the opportunity of wasting the tax payers money on 'NONE ESSENTIALS'. Maybe clothing from the Charity shops can be used? I hope the place can be used to get people onto firmer foundations and back into some sort of normal lifestyle and hope that this center is away from the main areas of the town, so that holiday makers can enjoy what the island has to offer, without seeing certain embarrassments which we'd rather them avoid.
  24. This is a fun Top Gear You Tube video from the game Battlefield 2. Jeremy Clarkson narrates through this 8 and a half minutes fun vehicle chase through woods and off road terrain. Absolutely brilliant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuuApoPa9r0
