I suggested as much back in 2010. A ‘Northern Powerhouse’ - Ramsey, Lezayre, Ballaugh, Michael, Jurby, Andreas, Bride, Maughold. All administered from Ramsey, with substantial Keys representation as well. Return functions such as housing and waste management to central government so they could simply concentrate on quality of environment issues

Moving on from this micro-parochialism would be a big step forward for the reform of politics on the Island. It wouldn’t stop people having a say but it would be a darn sight more efficient.

I don't think town and country mix

I wouldn't want a Ramsey centric view to cause conflict or bad feelings in the north.

The JAB MegaParish all share similar qualities

If ever there was a rotten borough have a look at the Jurby Parish nominees, proposers and seconders in this week's Courier's public notices.

I idly thought a few weeks ago that you potentially stage a coup in the north of the IOM with maybe..... 45 people?

Create the Jurby, Andreas & Bride MegaParish. JAB for short.

Oh I know that, but unless the DoI have made special provision for a new 'Annual' meeting after the new Councillors/Commissioners are in place, he will remain as Mayor until next May.  As far as I can tell Chatel is only taking over as Mayor in May 2022.  Which seems ridiculous given that she won't be a Councillor after this July.

And in the meanwhile Joughin continues to get lots of publicity as Mayor as we saw yesterday.

No, he's mayor until the next AGM in August at which point Chantel takes over until May 22

So he's fulfilling his duties as mayor, are you suggesting when you stand for MHK you should recuse yourself from any activity that might result in press coverage?

Presumably eventually, though Joughin is still showing as Mayor on the website.  I suppose she'll take over either on his formal nomination or  his election (hey, it's Douglas East, anything can happen).  If still means he gets lot of pictures in the paper in the interim though, unlike the other candidates.

It's all perfectly legal (and not uncommon in the UK) and I doubt many people will say "Oooh he's got a big chain - I'll vote for him!", but it still doesn't feel right, given that the Mayor is supposed to be 'non-political' for their year of office.  And the fact he remains Mayor with casting vote after the elections, even though not an elected member of the Council, is also a bit worrying.  The last would apply to Chatel as well of course.

    He's a councillor until 31st July

Jon Joughin, who is trying to regain his Keys seat, though he seems happy to remain Mayor even if not on the Council.

    [...]

even Raina Chatel, who it feels like has been on the Corpy since the end of the Ice Age, is stepping down.

Actually Raina is taking over as mayor....

Well technically two is a series, but it's hardly up there with Quirkio's seven in a row.

Speaking of blasts from the past I see Mr Singer has gone an got himself back back on Ramsey Commissioners.  Twice.

For one of the strange little local customs you wild men of the North seem to indulge in, is standing in both Ramsey Wards simultaneously, presumably in the hope that if  one Ward has enough candidates for election, then you can slip in unopposed in the other.  Not only Singer has done this trick, but so have Court, Cowell and Oldham.  Is this usual?

Oldham did it last time.... It's a cynical take on it or actually a helpful tactic, in the current situation you could have had 7 in one ward and 2 in another so an election in one ward and gaps in another.

Garff has had a couple adopt this tactic this time round, with Dobson contesting Onchan in the end.

If he has tried before and failed to get in what makes you or anyone think he will get in this time? Ashie was a serial candidate for the Keys until he was elected in 2016.

    What are his achievements?

he stood at the 2015 by-election and that was it?

    hardly serial

Can he stand if he doesn't live here?  Or is he proposing to commute or move back

I believe you have to be on the electoral roll on the IOM but you don't have to live in the constituency you stand in

Poor you. So I take it you would do away with positive discrimination? Employing under represented groups especially on the island, like LGBTQAI+ community, BAME, Various Religious groups and disabled applicants (in most normal societies they are guaranteed an interview!).

Or would you employed a Mate, or someone who is good at golf?

how would you go about positively discriminating towards those groups you mention? wouldn't you be struggling to comply with equality legislation by asking the questions to allow you to discover that information?

Why convert every figure to minimum wage salaries?  I understand that the living wage is one of your key priorities but the Isle of Man does not need 169,993 minimum wage salaries.

it also doesn't make sense in my head to compare capital investment in infrastructure with ongoing costs through benefits

even with the overspends and wasted money in the capital projects it's not an obvious move to just plough it into ongoing benefits
