  1. this is a desperate measure which wouldn't be necessary if the rates system were fair. How many big houses in the countryside are paying bugger all in rates because of the deficiencies in the system. The new tax impacts on the middle yet again because AB and his crew don't want to upset the higher income bracket. It harks back to the poll tax and the arguments about little old ladies living in big houses, a family of 5 in a 3 bed will produce a lot more crap than a single pensioner in a flat but they both pay the same, hows that fair. Ironically the biggest house on the island will only pay £50 this year and there are 35 of them there producing more sh*t than anyone else on the Island could possibly produce.
  2. Actually if its right it makes those who don't pay tax as they don't earn enough or are capped coz they do contribute.

  4. It certainly fits in with the current design standards, probably worthwhile for registration as a fine example of 21st century c**p. Is there no imagination in architecture. From memory parking at Summerland was a nightmare and this will be no better, do they think people will walk there. As for the land, better than cash in the bank (or under your bed Mr Horton) although why the likes of Hemmings and GFL are holding back on land and development beats me, they can't have that long on this mortal coil that they will really gain any benefits.
  5. BEEN AND GONE By Nick Serpell BBC Obituary Unit Round and round Our regular column covering the passing of significant - but lesser-reported - people of the past month. Thousands of British motorists found themselves going round in circles after Frank Blackmore invented the mini roundabout. A professional traffic engineer, he became frustrated with hold ups at conventional junctions, and campaigned for a system of priority from the right. When this failed to be accepted, he came up with the idea of a small roundabout with no centre. The first was installed in Peterborough 1969 with Blackmore, in attendance, shouting instructions at motorists through a loud hailer. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7484183.stm)

    Teeth

going to work in the mornings it surprises me how many kinds are seen with coke cans and sweets on their way to school. It highly likely that these kids are pushed of to school without a decent breakfast and perhaps given a quid to pick something up on the way IMO the parents of these kids should have a tooth pulled without pain relief every time those kids go for a check up. Yea ok kids love their sticky toffees and sugary drinks, but most of them don't have a shot at a decent diet and aren't encouraged to brush their teeth and I don't see why my kids, and I, should be forced to drink chemically enriched water just because others can't be arsed to look after the kids properly. Waits for the chlorine/aluminium shout - yes there are other chemicals put into the water, but their purpose is to make it potable, remove sediment, and make it fit to drink - they are not put there to address a social responsibility problem which isn't solvable by other means. If flouride is really a necessity perhaps they should lace the water with methadone - it would save dishing it out at chemists to the minority who need it, or aspirin to reduce the possible impact of heart attacks and head aches on our health services. Sorry but anything which is dispensed without control must be as pure as possible, medication of any kind (and lets class medication as an additive which contributes nothing to the purity of our water supply before someone says that flouride isn't a medicine) must be dispensed under controlled conditions to those who need it - not to those who patently don't because they are prepared to act responsibly provide their kids with a good balanced and nutritious diet and encourage dental hygiene.
