Mintchip
President Obama is coming to town (well, the one right next door to mine) tomorrow and one of my co-workers/friends is going to see him. I hadn't heard about it until she told me she was going. I don't know what it's all about but she is African-American and very excited. Honestly, he has done pretty much what I expected - not much so far. However, I'm happy that she is happy. And right now, the Yankees are beating the LA Angels 6-4 in the playoffs! Not a bad end to a fairly uneventful Thursday.
La_Dolce_Vita
Shame he received such a great deal of support simply or largely due to his skin colour. His being elected isn't some great achievement in respect of race in American, not at all. Yet many people seem to think it is.
Pragmatopian
As I type a motorcade is forming to escort Joe Biden and his bus-loads of flunkies and press through the mean streets of Prague (his hotel is opposite our offices). Nothing compared to the circus when Obama came in April, but still disproportionate to any other foreign dignitary who visits. It causes me to seriously question the Obama administration's environmental credentials: on a day trip to Prague Biden looks likely to generate more CO2 emissions that I do in a year... and that's before he opens his mouth! There was a lot of truth in an article I read yesterday - Obama's popularity owes a significant debt to the monumental unpopularity of what went before. I couldn't really understand the decision to award him the Nobel peace prize, seemingly because of intent rather than accomplishment. If in his Prague speech on nuclear disarmament he had declared that the United States would unilaterally denuke within a few years then I could understand it. Perhaps the Norweigans just want some glamour to break up the unrelentingly bleak winter?

Within what seemed like seconds, the Angels turned it all around again and beat the Yankees 7-6. Oh there will be a lot of unhappy people at work today! Unimpressed is probably the best word I have for P O. Have felt that way right from the beginning because I'm skeptical of those who seem to come out of the blue, yet are skyrocketed into an elevated position because of superficial reasons. All we heard was how important it was to have a black man in office - and I don't think it really truly mattered who that black man was - as long as it was someone that could win. During the elections I thought people were banking an awful lot on the color of his skin and expecting miracles of this man. So far, these great expectations have yet to be met even in small ways. Read this article from Gallup to get an idea of where he stands now among the American people: http://www.gallup.com/poll/123806/Obama-Qu...ine-Points.aspx As I said last night, he came to Connecticut today and my co-worker went to see him. She was ecstatic. However, following are some quotes from my local facebook connections who were not quite so thrilled: Paul: "Obama is coming to town so were not allowed to park on the street where our shop is, oh what crap..." Joe: "aint that some shit..id park there just to prove a point" Brian: "It's right around the corner from my building where I work. I hope his trip sucks, and that an Iraqi throws a shoe at him." Scott: "I should stand outside and hold a sign that says "YOU SUCK!" So there you have it in a nutshell. A lot of speeches, little action, and I think much disappointment. Even my mother who is an elderly white woman believed he was going to wave a magic wand and make the world all better. Now all she does is mutter about how he's going to reject the tiny raise in social security benefits that would offset the looming increase in her medicare costs. It is like thinking voting for Thatcher would be a victory for women and feminism. No, no, he is just another Democratic politician, though with a different background to the rest. That's all. But thank god it's not Bush.
