Stevie Boy
Have read all David Gemmels several times over (can strongly reccommend if you haven't) just looking for a new author of the same ilk. Must have read loads but never found anything as good. And lets try to keep it clean please, how many people looked at this topic thinking about the wrong fantasy books??? I'm also a fan of David Gemmell and read all his books. Terry Brooks Shannara books are a good read, Raymond Feist's Riftwar books are good also. Robin Hobb is terrific as is George Martin but heavier going. Outside fantasy but not dissimilar to Gemmel is Conn Iggulden's Emperor series. Enjoyed Eddings earlier works (Belgariad, Sparhawk books) his later stuff was mediocre (when his wife got involved!)

Pratchet which ones have you read because he gets better, the earlier discworlds are the weakest.

Back to the Future
Thanks so far. have also tried a few Terry Pratchet but have never been able to get into them. Always enjoyed the earlier T.P. books - another good author in humour type fantasy is Tom Holt. Fantasy stuff by Stephen Donaldson especially Thomas Covenant books also good... Bambster
Everyone's mentioned the ones I were going to. But noticed one. Robert Holdstock's Mythago Wood. I would also say the Conan Chronicles are a good fantasy read by Robert E. Howard.
Slim
George R R Martin, provided your happy embarking on a series that hasn't been concluded yet. Perhaps try some Neil Gaiman or some Michael Moorcock?
Rhumsaa
bit unusual but try Dan Abnett - some of the best sci fi fantasy I have read good for escapism anyway
