Adhd Island

Whilst I appreciate there are children (and parents) who are badly affected by ADHD, autism etc...I think "officials" can be too keen to label children who do not conform to the "norm".

I have a five year old boy, who is so imaginative, it gives me so much pleasure to see him play, in his land of fantasy - he is darth vadar, he is an alien, he is buzz light year - he loves to play with toys and be a child, running around outside fighting an inter-galactic battle (instead of sat infront of a DS, or playstation..!)

He can read, he can write and academically is on par with his peers.

Imagine my surprise when at a parents evening the teacher requested to us that he "be assessed - professionally" about his develepmental issues - I was like - what for? Is he behind in his work? No was the reply. This was the reasoning....

He does not sit still when it's story time....... HE'S A FIVE YEAR OLD BOY!

He does not play with toys appropriately - for example when playing shops he uses the play vegetables as space ships - HE'S A FIVE YEAR OLD BOY!

He changes the subject and does not make eye contact if he does not know the answer to a question, usually talks alot about aliens - HE IS A FIVE YEAR OLD BOY!

He took apart an electrical item and now they won't work - HE IS A FIVE YEAR OLD BOY - he probably wanted to see how it works

He is silly in PE and does not always obey commands - HE IS A FIVE YEAR OLD BOY

I refused point blank to allow my son to be assessed and labelled with some sort of "condition" at the age of five, because he is not a "sheep"

Don't get me wrong - if I though there was something wrong with my son - I would be the first to seek help, but at the end of the day - he is a five year old boy, he is a child, a little boy, who will, when he is old enough understand that he is not Darth Vader.

,

I would much rather have this loving, imaginative playful boy, than a child who lacks imagination

Sounds just like me and many others at Albert Road in the 60's; well done girl you have the right attitude.

Whilst some of the prescriptions are pointless, it's important to remember that a lot of this will be down to the fact that ADHD is a relatively new discovery. The same way people used to just die for no reason, we now know if they have cancer. Some kids used to be utter pricks, now we know some of them have ADHD.

"If kids went out and climbed trees and played in fields, they would soon wear some of that excess energy off, but I do feel sorry for those parents and siblings of kids who do have ADHD, usually as an addition to autism/Aspergers. They really need the drugs prescribed for them"

100% yes.....................totally agree with that!

I agree helix. And it goes away with age.

Dope them up I say. Sorry. I mean treat them.

It will be many years before we know if the doctors were correct of course. But they usually are.

I really wish I could believe that but it's rubbish. It is just trying to identify a reason for bad behaviour in my book. All kids are not wired the same. There's no surprise there. You either embrace your child's slightly different behaviour, or you shovel Ritalin down them to make them comply with what you think is acceptable. I would suggest that a lot of times (not all) the problem is with the parents and their perceived social status and views on what is normal not the child.

Yes, that will work with a lot of children. Not all of them however, which is what ritalin is for.

I agree that ADHD is overdiagnosed, and ritalin is overprescribed, but there are cases where it's the correct course of action.

I'm one of the few remaining people who simply were crap at school rather than it being due to some deep-seated medical condition.

I think you're special if that helps.

You have some interesting posts loaf - so I think you might well have caught up throuigh the University of Life.

Aww, Albert!! You are a real softie at heart! or are you just trying to 'butter' loaf up?

So as well as having autism (which was probably brought about by injecting a cocktail of chemicals into their bloodstream at such a young age) we then prescribe them some more chemicals to help with the symptoms of ingesting a lot more chemicals. Not a bad business model this pharmaceutical lark is it?

Citation fucking needed. There has NEVER been a proven link between vaccination and autism. There have been many proven links between lack of vaccination and catching diseases, however. Including deaths caused by people listening to the tripe the likes of you push around:

Yup. And it's a business that will save your life one day. It probably has already.

Or do you want to go back to the bad old days?

Nope, we can, and should, take the breakthroughs and advances from modern medicine and the positives from alternative medicine and marry the two together. Unfortunately never the twain shall meet due to the drive for ££££'s.

When you spout shit that runs the risk of ending with children catching diseases due to lack of vaccination? You're damn right I'm going to protest.

And no, I don't.

If you took the good parts of modern medicine and the good parts from alternative medicine you'd end up with modern medicine.
