guzzi Posted January 28, 2015 Share Posted January 28, 2015 There was an item on Radio 4's 'Today' programme about 'Serial', a podcast that examined a murder case in great detail over 12 episodes. I have become quite an avid listener to speech based podcasts over the last couple of years, and I soaked up each episode of 'Serial' as soon as it appeared on iTunes, just as I do for it's parent programme, 'This American Life'. As well as the two I've mentioned, my current list includes 'Answer Me This', 'The Bugle', Richard Herring's various offerings, 'The Moth' 'There's No Such Thing as a Fish' and 'Welcome to Night Vale'. I'm a big podcaster, have been for years, brill for filling your head with nonsense while running our out on the bike! Loved Serial, properly sucked me in and I thought the ending was very well done too. While it was heading for a fairly unsatisfying conclusion, I think she did well to tie it up and leave you to decide. If you like Serial, make sure you try invisibelia, it's very good indeed. You might like WTF and the nerdist if you like the bugle. I had to unsub from the bugle in the end as the constant false laughing really got on my tits. Can you describe The Moth, There's no such thing and Welcome to night vale, not heard of those three. Anyway, my list is filled with quite a lot of specialised 'casts around my interests of infosec and coding, but here's mine for info: Serial - Investigative series re-opening an old case (on a break, sigh!) Invisibilia - Documentaries about the intangible from This American Life Kermode & Meyo Wittertainment - movie reviews from radio 5 This American life - short stories about allsorts Freakanomics - explaining things with an economic slant Giantbomb - video games innit Idle Thumbs - more video games innit NPR Planet Money - short money focused show Hanselminutes - general tech with a ms/.net focus Tour De France Podcast - three journos talking about cycling, not limited to tdf Tech News Today - Twit, often deleted but i'll listen when there's something i want Guardian Tech Weekly - very general and non-techie tech news but has some interesting insights The Media Podcast - Used to be guardian but broken off, now talks about british media in general, particularly TV and newspapers. Guardian Science Weekly - Science news, well presented and easy to understand TED Radio Hour - Ted talks condenced to podcasts BBC Infinite Monkey Cage - science comedy panel thing with brian cox RSA Events Audio - very British audio essays about allsorts WNYC's Radiolab - same but US centric NPR All Songs Considered - American focused but has some good, unusual recommends The Bottom Line - squintly bloke from dragons den talks business The Boss Show - about work issues and psychology .net rocks - very MS focused but well presented and useful Sword and Laser - Book show focusing on Scifi and fantasy ..There's some more, threatpost, southern fried for security, gigaom, o'reilly Radar for tech.. Some are regulars, some are public figures, many are not. There's No Such Thing as a Fish - spin-off from QI in which some of the QI elves and occasional guests talk about unusual facts. Funny and sometimes even Quite Interesting! Welcome to Night Vale - a radio broadcast from an imaginary desert town where all conspiracy theories are true. I see you listen to his Sword and Laser show, have you tried his DTNS? Initially yes, but it's quite long as I recall? I went off TNT when Tom left and Mike was awful at first. Only two episodes so far, so I don't know how good it will be in the long term, but Helen is an engaging speaker and she seems knowledgeable on the subject. People who have listened to 'Answer Me This' will already know about her, and Buglers will also know her brother Andy Zaltzman, who is also in the first episode.
