They mist have savings, they must have a house. Any award should come out of their own personal wealth. Has the book been published ? It seems that in EU Portugal you can libel anyone and expect compensation when they challenge that libel in court. He had a different theory, being in possesion 9f more of the facts than any of us. They didn't like his theory, sued him and won but then lost at appeal.
